The next round of Formula 1 action comes from Monaco on Sunday 26th May and Couch Critic takes a look at the odds and provides his best bets.
WHAT HAPPENED AT THE LAST RACE?
It was yet another display of total dominance from the silver arrows in Spain.Bottaspipped team mate Hamilton for pole (which cost us our Betolimp special bet) but Lewis burnt him off the line and into the first corner and it was game-over from there. The rest of the field never got close to challenging the Mercs at the front.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN MONACO
The street track in the Principality is seen by many as the not-to-miss race of the season. Of course for all its history, prestige and picturesque beauty the fact of the matter is that the streets of Monaco hardly lend themselves to overtaking and fierce jostling for positions – it is much more a race of attrition than skill (apart of course from staying away from the barriers!). Hamilton has a race win here in 2016 and a top qualifying spot in 2015 but apart from that the streets of Monaco have belonged to the Ferrari’s and Red Bull more than the three-pointed stars. Charles Leclerc returns to his hometown, for the first time in the Ferrari and will be chomping at the bit to put his best foot forward.
The Mercs might have had it all their way thus far but in Monaco we could finally see a tight battle for supremacy. It must however be said that the closest thing we’ve seen to Monaco thus far in 2019 was Baku, and here the Mercedes cars were well clear of the rest.
VERDICT
The untimely passing of Niki Lauda has put a dampener on the lead-up to the event but the F1 legend was a World Champion Mercedes driver and Non-Executive Director of the team and one can expect the men in silver to put a special effort in his memory. Hamilton in particular is the type of driver who can lift his effort for special occasions and I expect the Champ to be ultra-determined to deliver on this occasion as he pays his respects to Lauda.
We missed out on the Special last week but I see no need to divert from this strategy this week.
