tigerThere are a wide range of markets for golf punters to get stuck into when the US Masters commences at Augusta National on Thursday and in this article we have a look at the Top 10 and Top 20 markets.

While there are few things better than backing a 50/1 shot in the outright market, I have found a more sustainable long-term strategy is to focus on the Top 10 and Top 20 markets and the bookmaker of choice here is Sportingbet as they pay out ties in full.

So if for example you back a golfer to finish in the Top 10 and he comes 9th with 6 other players (a reality in golf) dead heat rules will apply and you will end up with precious little in the way of funds back in your account.

Sportingbet prices are sometimes a bit shorter in these markets for example you may get 4/1 instead of 9/2 for a Top 20 bet, but I will take the ties paid in full option every day of the week – click here to open Sportingbet account.

TOP 10 MARKET

2 Units Justin Rose at 6/5 Sportingbet

Rose is the number 1 golfer in the World currently and while he has never won at Augusta, he loves the course and has not finished outside the Top 25 in the last 8 years. He was just outside the Top 10 last year finishing 12th, but the 3 previous years this bet would have collected and I am more than happy to take the 6/5 on offer.

2 Units Justin Thomas at 7/4 Sportingbet

Thomas doesn’t have the same course pedigree as Rose having played this event 3 times, but what stands out is he has improved on each occasion from 39th on debut to 17th last year. He is a class golfer who has already won a Major and his game is ideally suited to Augusta.

TOP 20 FINISH

2 Units Louis Oosthuizen at 5/4 Sportingbet

Louis came so close to winning this event back in 2012, going out in a playoff to Bubba Watson and while he missed the cut the following year, he has been incredibly consistent since then with 4 Top 25 finishes in his last 5 starts and 3 of these would have seen him finish in the Top 20. Importantly though Louis is playing great golf and his swing looked in top shape at the WGC Dell Matchplay a couple of weeks ago.

1 Unit Lucas Bjerregaard at 4/1 Sportingbet

Bjerregaard really impressed in the Matchplay where he was eventually beaten in the Bronze Medal Match. His victories included a win over Tiger Woods in the quarter-finals and the guy just has a look of someone who is going to go well in the Majors. He makes his debut here while I don’t see him contending down the stretch on Sunday I think 4/1 that he finishes in the Top 20 is a decent value.
