Free State Stars v Maritzburg United

Match Result Betting

Free State Stars 7/4, Draw 2/1, Maritzburg 18/10

Free State Stars are looking for their first point and first goal of the new season. Stars went down 3-0 away to Bidvest Wits in their opening match, conceding twice in the first half and once in the second.

Maritzburg had to wait until Sunday to open their campaign and it was a disappointing outcome as they lost a KZN derby 2-0 at home to Golden Arrows. Both those goals came in the last 20 minutes and the Team of Choice now travel to meet the side who beat them in the Nedbank Cup final at the end of last season.

Maritzburg were 1 of 3 sides to win at Free State in the league last season, coming out on top 3-0 but Free State were 1-0 winners when the teams met in KZN.

Verdict:

It’s hard to gauge which of these sides is best placed to bounce back from disappointing results in their opening matches where they failed to find the net. With that in mind a 0-0 scoreline at half time gets my vote.

Bet: Half time result 0-0 at 5/4

Golden Arrows v Bloem Celtic

Match Result Betting

Golden Arrows 13/10, Draw 2/1, Bloem Celtic 49/20

Arrows were grateful to their goalkeeper who made some fine saves and kept a clean sheet in their 2-0 win at Maritzburg on Sunday. Arrows home form last season was streaky but they did find the net in 13 of 15 league games in front of their own supporters.

Bloem Celtic made a winning start under Steve Komphela when they saw off Chippa 2-0 in a home fixture on Sunday. Celtic recovered from a sluggish start where they were starved of possession to run out worthy winners with a goal in each half. Away from home last season Celtic won 2 and drew 2 of their first 4 but failed to win any of their 11 subsequent road trips.

The corresponding fixture last season ended 1-1 whilst Celtic were 2-1 winners when the sides met in Bloem.

Verdict:

Another tough call to make but slight preference is for the draw.

Bet: Match result draw at 2/1

Chippa United v Orlando Pirates

Match Result Betting

Chippa 22/10, Draw 2/1, Pirates 14/10

Chippa faded badly in their opening match which saw them beaten 2-0 away at Bloem Celtic. They played some good football early on but seemed to lack a cutting edge. Last season Chippa drew 8 of their 15 home games, winning 4 and drawing 3.

Pirates were held to a 1-1 draw by newly promoted Highlands Park in Orlando on Saturday night. The Bucs were missing a couple of key players at the weekend but still went off as odds on favourites in their season opener. Away from home in 2017/18 Pirates drew 4 and lost 1 of their first 5 road trips but they did win 6 of the next 10 as they found top form.

In last season’s head to heads Pirates were 1-0 winners in Orlando and they won 4-2 in Port Elizabeth.

Verdict:

I expect improvement for Chippa for this home game and at their best they can give the Bucs a scare or 2. Whether they have enough to win is another matter and preference is for both sides to find the net.

Bet: Both teams to score? (yes) at 21/20

Baroka FC v Cape Town City

Match Result Betting

Baroka 2/1, Draw 2/1, Cape Town City 15/10

New coach Wedson Nyirenda saw his Baroka side lose their opening game 1-0 at Amazulu. They fell behind in the 18th minute and there was no further scoring and they now bid for improvement in this first home game.

Cape Town City impressed with a 2-0 home win over Supersport United in their first action. After a goalless first half City came on strong in the second 45 minutes with goals from Putsche and Martin. They now bid for a first away win and last season City struggled on the road in the second half of the campaign, failing to win any of the last 7 on their travels.

Last season Baroka were 2-0 winners at home to City whilst the head to head in Cape Town finished 1-1.

Verdict:

This looks a decent chance for City to make it 2 wins from 2 although their away record in the second half of last season would have to be of some concern. I’ll chance my arm with the visitors to score more goals in the second half than they do in the first.

Bet: Highest Scoring Half Away Team, 2nd half at 17/10

Supersport United v Amazulu

Match Result Betting

Supersport 23/20, Draw 2/1, Amazulu 27/10

Supersport are another side looking to open their points and goals account after a 2-0 defeat at Cape Town City at the weekend. They did finish last season strongly at home with 3 wins and 2 draws although Amazulu were 1 of 3 sides to beat them earlier in the campaign.

Amazulu edged out Baroka FC 1-0 in a home fixture and Saturday and now bid to make it 2 wins from 2 games for Cavin Johnson. They were hard to catch right away from home last season, winning 3, drawing 6 and losing 6 but they did win at Sundowns and also drew away to Chiefs and Pirates.

Verdict:

I’ll go with Supersport to put themselves on the board for the season although they are far from banker material against a side who can dig in when visiting strong sides.

Bet: Supersport to win at 23/20
