Mamelodi Sundowns v Golden Arrows

90 Minute Match Result Betting

Sundowns 6/10, Draw 28/10, Golden Arrows 5/1

Sundowns have been on the wrong end of some surprise results in this competition in recent seasons. In 2017 they lost 1-0 at home to Maritzburg, they did finish as runners up to Wits in 2016 but they also fell at the first hurdle in 2014 and 2015.

Downs have made a solid enough start to the Absa Premiership season, drawing 1-1 at home to Kaizer Chiefs and winning 2-0 away to Polokwane City on Tuesday night.

Arrows bowed out at this stage of the 2017 MTN8, losing on penalty kicks away at Bidvest Wits. That was their first appearance in the Top 8 cup since 2009 when they went all the way and lifted the trophy after crushing Ajax Cape Town 6-0 in the final.

In the early stages of the Absa Premiership season Arrows won their opening game 2-0 at Maritzburg but on Wednesday night they lost 2-0 at home to Bloem Celtic.

Verdict:

Sundowns should have enough to put some indifferent MTN8 form behind them but this isn’t the best of betting heats and a 2-0 correct score pick satisfies the interest.

Bet: Downs to win 2-0 in 90 minutes

Kaizer Chiefs v Free State Stars

90 Minute Match Result Betting

Chiefs 17/20, Draw 47/20, Free State Stars 34/10

This competition presents the latest opportunity for Chiefs to end their silverware drought and they last had their hands on this trophy in 2014. A year later they finished as runners up to Ajax but in the last 2 seasons they have fallen at the first hurdle, 1-0 at Cape Town City in 2016 and 1-0 at home to Supersport in 2017.

In the Absa Premiership season so far Chiefs picked up a decent point away to Sundowns first time out but in midweek they conceded some soft goals in a 3-1 home defeat to Bidvest Wits.

Free State are appearing in the MTN8 for the first time since 2013 and over the years they have no Top 8 Cup pedigree to speak of. However last season they did win the Nedbank Cup and that cup run did include a semi final win over Chiefs.

Free State Stars began their Absa Premiership campaign with a 3-0 loss away to Wits but they bounced back in midweek with a 2-1 home win over Maritzburg.

Verdict:

At the price quoted at the time of writing Chiefs represent no value whatsoever but despite their shoddy display in defence in midweek, they are normally tough to score against and I wouldn’t want to oppose them in a competition they have to be targeting.

I’ll stick with the small and speculative correct score plays with Chiefs to win 2-0 in 90 minutes my pick.

Bet: Chiefs to win 2-0 in 90 minutes.

Orlando Pirates v Supersport United

90 Minute Match Result Betting

Pirates 8/10, Draw 47/20, Supersport 73/20

Pirates were not involved in the MTN8 last season whilst in 2016 and 2015 they exited at this quarter final stage. They were runners up in 2014.2013 and 2011 and they last had their hands on this trophy in 2010.

Pirates have picked up 4 points from their 2 Absa Premiership matches so far. After being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Highlands Park last weekend they travelled to Port Elizabeth to take on Chippa on Wednesday and they came away with a 1-0 victory.

Supersport are the holders of this trophy having beaten Cape Town City in a penalty shoot out in last season’s final. They have been a better side in cup competitions rather than the league in recent times and they were reliant on a rejig of last season’s Absa Premiership standings after Ajax were docked points in order to defend the trophy here.

Supersport’s league campaign started with a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Cape Town City but in midweek they opened their account with a 1-0 home win over Amazulu.

Verdict:

Pirates picked up a useful win in the league in midweek and I fancy they will have further improvement to follow but they come up against a side who are not to be underestimated in knockout football and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this head into extra time.

Bet: Correct Score 1-1 in 90 minutes.
