ellis parkThe Lions host Western Province in Johannesburg in the final action of Round 12 of the Currie Cup on Saturday. The home side are still without a win whilst the visitors need victory to keep their hopes of sneaking into the play offs alive

Lions v Western Province, Saturday 28th May, Johannesburg, KO 17:00 (South African time)

Referee: Stephan Geldenhuys
TMO: Marius van der Westhuizen

Weather Forecast – Johannesburg

The Lions fielded many URC players for their visit to the Bulls in the previous round. They were 35-17 down by half time but fought back to get within a point of the log leaders before a late Bulls try condemned them to a tenth straight defeat (43-37).

The Lions have been getting closer to that elusive victory in recent weeks, including a home game against the Griquas where the decisive score came right at the death.

They have 5 bonus points to show for their efforts so far but they are 8 points adrift at the foot of the standings with just this game and a visit to the Sharks to come.

Lions Currie Cup Fixtures and Results

Western Province:

WP came away from Nelspruit with a 23-17 win over the Pumas last time out. That was only their second victory of the tournament and their first since they beat the Lions (48-36) in Cape Town in the opening round.

Province have now picked up 13 log points and they finished the previous round second from bottom in the standings, 7 points behind the Pumas, 8 behind the Griquas and 11 behind the third placed Sharks. After this WP finish up with home games against Griquas and the Sharks and they have no margin for error if they are to gate-crash a play off spot.

Betting Angle

When I handicapped this game in the Goodforthegame Forum I went Lions +6.5, but made the disclaimer that this handicap would change dramatically if the Lions selected the URC players. I haven't seen the team yet, but word on the street that is exactly what they are going to do and they are now priced at 6 point favourites for the match. This Western Province side have looked better in recent outings and it was only a couple of weeks ago that the Lions with their full strength side failed to beat what amounted to a Bulls B/C team. I have no confidence in the handicap either way and will be waiting patiently for the points lines before getting involved.

Update 27 May 14h30

The points line is high at 59.5 but I expect both teams to go for the tries and will take an interest in over 8.5 tries at 11/10

BET: 3 units over 8.5 tries at 11/10 at Sportingbet
