There will be 5 African nations competing in Qatar 2022 and their identities will be determined by the outcome of these plays offs staged over 2 legs. The headline clash has to be the match up between Egypt and Senegal and we have recent form to work with in the shape of the AFCON final earlier this year.

Egypt

Egypt lost the AFCON final to Senegal staged in Cameroon on on spot kicks (0-0 90 mins and extra time). They were involved in a series of tight matches throughout the AFCON finals including a penalty shoot out win of their own in the semi finals against the host nation. They also beat Morocco 2-1 in extra time in the last 8 and in the Round of 16 they beat Ivory Coast on spot kicks. Egypt's only other defeat in the tournament came against Nigeria in the group stage.

Egypt sealed their World Cup play off place with 4 wins and 2 draws in their group to finish in front of Gabon, Libya and Angola.

Senegal

Senegal improved steadily throughout the AFCON finals and although Mane missed a penalty in regulation time of the final he atoned for his error in the shoot out. Their road to the final had been less taxing than that of Egypt in terms of quality of the opposition but they conceded just 2 goals throughout the whole tournament and were crowned champions for the first time.

Senegal won 5 and drew 1 of their World Cup qualifying group matches to finish in front of Togo, Namibia and Congo.

The Betting (1st Leg)

Egypt are 1.65/1 to win the game in regulation time, a draw is 18/10 and Senegal are 1.85/1

A game of 3 goals or more 41/20 and it's 1.43/1 for both teams to find the net.

Verdict:

I reckon we can quite possibly strap ourselves in for another tight contest in the first leg, and perhaps the second leg too.

Egypt need to make the most of home advantage but come into the first leg arguably under the most pressure to get their noses in front. I'm pinning my hopes on a 1-1 draw for a small wager

Bet: Correct score 1-1 at 39/10
