More World Cup 2022 places are up for grabs on Tuesday and our featured match is the second leg of the play offs between Portugal and giant killers North Macedonia

Portugal took another step to booking their place in Qatar later this year when they beat Turkey 3-1 in the play off semi finals last week. Otavio and Jota put them in control with a 2-0 lead at half time and although Turkey halved the deficit and then subsequently missed a penalty, an injury time goal from Nunes sealed the deal.

Portugal were runners up (3 points behind Serbia) in their qualifying group with Ireland a distant third. They won 5, drew 2 and lost 1 of their group matches, scoring 17 goals and conceding 6. They lost top spot after a 0-0 draw in Ireland followed by a 2-1 defeat at home to Serbia in their final group match. They also drew 2-2 in Serbia and were foot perfect against some pretty weak nations.

In last years Euro's Portugal came through the group of death behind France and Germany but went out in the Round of 16 with a 1-0 defeat to Belgium.

North Macedonia pulled off a major surprise when they won their semi final against Italy 1-0 in Palermo last week. After a terrific defensive display Aleksandar Trajkovski smashed in an injury time winner to knock out the European Champions.

North Macedonia also stunned Germany with a 2-1 win away from home in their WC qualification group in making it to these play offs.

In last years Euro's North Macedonia lost to Austria (3-1), Ukraine (2-1) and the Netherlands (3-0) in what was their only appearance in a major tournament finals.

Verdict:

North Macedonia will look to frustrate for as long as possible in the hope they can pull off another smash and grab raid. It doesn't pay to underestimate these guys but I think this will be a bridge too far and if Portugal get in front early enough they could go on to put daylight into the scoreboard.

I'll go with Portugal to score 3 goals or more.
