We are only 2 weeks into the Super Rugby season and from a punting perspective I have already experienced a rollercoaster ride of note.
Week 1 saw me off to a brilliant start and I cleaned up in the spreads markets when the Waratahs hammered the Rebels. I really could not have asked for more and not surprisingly I was super confident heading into week 2.
That’s when the rollercoaster started to dip and head downwards though and after misreading the Brumbies and Reds games I was a fair bit behind with the Sharks and Stormers games to come.
I have often preached on the Goodforthegame website (and probably in this column) about the fact that you should never chase losses but sadly those wise words fell on deaf ears. My previous bets on the weekend at least had sound reasoning and the reality is that sometimes things just don’t go your way.
In the Sharks match I went high on the Blues points and looking back that was a foolish if not desperate move. Not only do the Blues have a terrible record against the Sharks but I was well aware of the humidity factor at this time of year. My judgment clouded though I ignored all of the evidence at hand and climbed in with some pretty big bets.
By half time I knew I was in trouble and the 2nd half was nothing short of depressing as the Blues coughed the ball up every time they looked dangerous. It felt as though the punting Gods were having a good laugh at my expense and the nett result was a very poor weekend to the point that all of my week 1 profits plus interest was returned to the bookmakers.
What then of week 3? Getting “back on the bike” after a fall is always tough and the worst thing that I can do is try and undo last week by coming out firing. That would be chasing again and will most likely compound the current position so instead I have decided to give my family a long awaited camping trip.
My wife resigned to the fact that I refuse to go away during Super Rugby season nearly fainted when I suggested the excursion but some time away from rugby and betting is just what the doctor ordered.
