“Meaningless” try sparks victory lap! Print E-mail

This past weekend saw me pack up the wife and kids and head off to Dikhololo for our annual get together with the extended family. It is a weekend filled with sun, food, drink and in my case usually a betting tale of sorts.

Having enjoyed a roller coaster ride over the first 3 Currie Cup games I sat nicely up heading into the final fixture between WP and the Sharks. Struggling to read the game I decided not to have a bet and took Angela and Robert down to the clubhouse pool instead.

Refreshed I left them in the care of their mom and wondered over to the pub where my uncle and cousins were watching the game. Half time was approaching and as a cold beer nestled down in front of me the question was not whether I would be betting on the 2nd half but rather on what market and how much?

I eventually settled on a spread bet which saw me high on Sharks try scorer shirt numbers at 25. They were on 8 (Kankowski) at that stage and I needed Sharks tries preferably by big numbers.

There was precious little to shout about in the first 20 minutes but when the Sharks won a penalty I confidently announced that they would set up a lineout, drive it forward and then swing it for Ludik number 22 to score. Amazingly the forward drive aside that is exactly what happened and I got a few strange looks as I shouted “Number 22, Ludik you biscuit” as the replacement went over.

The pressure off I told the cousins that Jacobs number 21 would be next but when the hooter sounded with WP in possession it appeared the chance had gone. Amazingly and with nothing to gain they ran the ball and turned it over allowing Lambie to send Jacobs through well after the hooter. A small profit had become a big win and I high fived cousins David and Peter before doing a victory lap around what was by now a bewildered pub.

That night at the braai we laughed about the various reactions and I can only imagine that around other fires there were people chatting about the madman who cheered a Sharks consolation try as hard as if they had won the Currie Cup.

In sports betting every minute and every point counts!
