As a punter you accept that you are going to go through a rollercoaster of high’s and low’s but every now and again you go on a run which lives in the memory and brings you back for more.
I lost money on the Presidents Cup but that aside have barely logged onto an online bookmaker since the Currie Cup. On Friday night though I was itching for some action and went high on Bath shirt numbers in the Aviva Premiership. It was a terrible game and I took a hammering. Come Saturday I was firing into the Barbarians v Wallabies game and was high on Aussie shirt numbers as my main bet. With 3 minutes to go until the break they had only mustered a single try and I was staring down the barrel.
It was Summer Cup time so I recorded the end of the half and switched to Telly Track for Joburg’s biggest race. I had a sneak for Dancewiththedevil a mare which many felt would not get the distance although I was delighted that my colleague at Goodforthegame Alan Moscrop made a sound case for her.
Not exactly feeling flush I took some 20/1 and also threw in swingers with Flirtation and Ilsanpietro. At the last minute I decided to box the Trifecta and as I was doing so I recalled an old school friend Sandi posting on my Facebook wall that friends of hers owned Rudra. I threw it in and took the boxed trifecta once for R24.
As they turned for home I was short of hope as Dancewiththedevil rolled along in last but I quickly rose from the couch as she stormed through to beat Ilsanpietro and who else but Rudra. My win bets and swingers aside the R24 trifecta returned R2900 and suddenly the pressure was off my rugby bets.
My mood improved further when saw the Australian 14 go over before the break and they cut loose in the 2nd half delivering me a maximum profit in the spreads. It had been under an hour since I had felt like I was digging myself into a serious hole but the beauty of punting is you never know when your fortunes will turn and I was suddenly flying with the Bath game but a distant memory.
It may not have been my most profitable weekend but it was certainly my finest hour!
