thecitizen_banner Goodforthegame sports betting analyst Brent Graham reviews the performance of his “Best Bet Mailing List” over the 1st 7 months of 2011.

Regulars to this website will know that I send out a weekly e-mail with my best bet as well as links to the major previews on Goodforthegame. On the one hand I try to add some value to those who sign up by hopefully showing a profit in the long run but also by sharing my reasons for placing the bets which for newcomers has educational value. It is also a good tool for me though as while I track my weekly balances with the bookies it is interesting to see how I would do if I were allowed only 1 bet a week (something I realise I would never have the discipline to do).

A quick look at how 2010 panned out

Staked: 241 units

Returned: 260.29 units

Profit: 19.29 units
ROI: 8%

I ended the year strongly with a 40% return in the Currie Cup after a poor start that even saw me take a couple of months off.

2011 – So far so good

Staked: 150 units

Returned: 174.3 units

Profit: 24.3 units
ROI: 16.2%

I am certainly in a much better position than I was last year this time and that is courtesy of a good run in Super Rugby where I placed 20 bets for 14 wins and 6 losses and a return on investment of 35.5%. These figures were achieved betting on the matches themselves and in a reverse of last year it was my long term punts on the Crusaders (10 units at 7/2) and Lions to beat Cheetahs (10 units at 11/10 in December 2010) that let me down although the Crusaders bet certainly offered trading opportunities.

My rule as far as long term punts go is to count them in the year they are completed and in this regard we got a nice boost when Brighton won promotion to the Championship having been highlighted at 5/1 for 5 units back in July of 2010.

My focus has been almost purely on rugby and on the rare occasion I highlighted another sporting code the results were not great so with Currie Cup, Tri Nations and World Cup on the horizon, expect more of the same for the balance of the year.

My bet size this year was very consistent averaging out at 5 units (what’s a unit?) in Super Rugby but like last year my bigger bets tended to arrive and I made three 7 unit plays at odds of 8/10 or better and all arrived.

There are no guarantees in this game but I am hoping to finish the year off strongly so if we you like to get onto my *Best Bet Mailing list just drop an e-mail to brent@goodforthegame.co.za and title it “Best Bets”. It is a free service and I never get tired of talking sports betting.
