I never thought I would say these words and I hope that my wife does not see this article but there was simply too much rugby this past weekend, at least for someone trying to bet on every game.
On Thursday I was salivating at the prospect of Friday night rugger followed Saturday morning by the Hurricanes v Lions which kicked off a run of 7 live games only ending some 11 hours later.
This article would probably read very differently had I been making money but I took a knock when I backed a lethargic Hurricanes side to score plenty of tries and then followed that up going high on try scorers shirt number in the Reds v Blues match only to see after I had placed the bet that it was pouring with rain (no excuses for that one, a beginners mistake).
By this point I had my back to the wall and upped my stake on the Force Chiefs game where I needed the Force to score tries in what looked like decent conditions. They got their first and last in the 75th minute and having given back more of the previous weeks profits that I should have, I collapsed on the couch, literally a spent force.
My mate Larry and his family were out from the States and were popping in for a couple of hours to catch up and I decided at that point to switch the TV off and forget about the remaining 4 games rather than chase my losses and spend every minute running to the lounge to check the score when I should be reminiscing about old times.
The sense of relief at knowing I was done for the day took me by surprise and it made me think about the fact that trying to bet on too many games over a weekend is not wise. Had I continued playing I would in all likelihood only have returned more proceeds to the bookmakers and in the end I limited my losses which is as important as maximizing your wins at the end of the day.
I am now considering implementing a new policy of only betting on 3 rugby games in a day but please don’t tell Trish yet as at this stage it is still a draft bill and parliament (me) may well still withdraw it entirely.

Nice piece Brent, I can relate to that
Having written it on Tuesday I must say that I am already reconsidering the 3 game rule and am anxious for the weekends rugby to begin.
3 games only!!! Please dont get this drafted with the SA bookies
Great article. If you fancy a winner in all games then bet on all games, if there is only one game that you feel strongly for - then just do one bet and never chase losses - clouds the judgement. Have a stoploss each day and stick to that (Easier said than done!)
My weekend "bankers" Both caps have been adjusted
- Saders -5.5 (Now -10.5)
- Chiefs -12.5 (Now -14.5)
Wish I got on the Brumbies at -15.5
