2011 Punting High's and Low's

2011 Punting High's and Low's

It is the time on the year when we reflect on our punting performance and plan ahead to 2012. I have loads of betting memories good and bad and will be sharing the ones that standout in a blog which will be posted shortly.

If you recall a moment when you were flying high and felt like the King of the Punting World or if you hit rock bottom and started to dig then share your memory in this thread.

Re: 2011 Punting High's and Low's

Brent, fascinating topic - I'll have to think it a bit harder reflecting the past 12 months, but in the last 5 days I've hit the roller-coaster of highs and lows on horse racing punting. Absolute low on Saturday when Divine Jet got beat, followed by Link Man yesterday, but (as recent as 10 minutes back), I hit an absolute high when tipping Prince of Wings this morning on the forum @ 22/10 for 4.5 units and the swinger with Love Boat, which paid R14.4 for 1.5 units - yielding a remarkable profit of 30 units on one race. But unfortunately the day is not over yet and I've committed to 3 other horses. Wow, what an exhillirating ride - absolutely love it!  big_smile

Re: 2011 Punting High's and Low's

LOL nice one Charles!

One of the high's which never made my blog was Dancewiththedevil winning the Summer Cup - that sparked a turnaround in my rugby fortunes and my most profitable hour.

Here is my 2011 wrap up http://www.goodforthegame.co.za/betting … 1-but.html - a great year but strangely it is the 2 near misses (France and the Crusaders) that I will remember the longest.

Re: 2011 Punting High's and Low's

Nice article and thread BG.

My contribution to a 2011 where I blew hot and cold all year...

Cricket

World Cup - Zaheer Khan top Indian tournament bowler, not a huge bet but poured hours into research of just one market and got loads of satisfaction when it arrived in comprehensive fashion  big_smile   big_smile

WI v India ODI, Andre Russell Man of the Match 18/1 landed, was my first big MoM winner after a few near misses  big_smile

1-Day-Cup, a pretty good strike rate in the exotics on a match by match basis but will be remembered for a disastrous runs bet when the Titans disintegrated on a good batting wicket against the Knights, I wrecked my bank completely.  sad

Football

Copa America, put loads into this, previewed every game, started horribly, couldn't pick a winner in the first two rounds of group matches, stuck at it, steadied the ship in the end of the group games and was pretty much foot perfect in the 1/4s semis and final...Probably just about showed a profit but took great heart from turning round a shocking start  big_smile

English footy, a blistering run of form in September this year where I really thought I had cracked this game, unders/overs, ht results, both teams to score all arriving regularly, unfortunately was followed by two very lean months and some erratic weekends of late. Throw in a few Saturday nights on the platform at Gateshead for the one leg out acca's and there were more lows than highs  sad   sad   sad

Brighton League 1 Outright - Chuffed to bits with that one, the hard yards of research paid off  big_smile   big_smile

Bundesliga, love my overs bets and have generally done well in Germany  big_smile

PSL - some big winners at the end of last season, Supersport at 7/1 at Pirates and Maritzburg 9/2 beating Sundowns, also called Swallows turn around correctly and did well in their matches towards the end of last season. This season more hit and miss but I generally more than held my own in the local footy and love seeking out the value with the big differences in how the books price up.  big_smile

Aside from whatever I got up to in 2011 I enjoy reading what others are going for, this community has much more depth this year with Euro Rugby, F1 and Racing and a credit to all who contribute and that 7's thread the other week and the RWC pool stage threads were different class in terms of input and profit  beersmiley

Happy Xmas Lads  footballsmiley

Re: 2011 Punting High's and Low's

Hey Guys

Great write up Brent. Well my high for this year has to be the golf for the first 4 months of the year where I picked up Martin Laird, Sabatini and then the big one of CHarl at the Masters,  that was the biggest win at 110/1 if I remember.

Lows, numerous but the one which still is fresh in my mind, is the MLB Leaugue, had both the Brewers and Tigers at decent odds from the start of the season to win their respective leagues, only to have both fall out at the last hurdle.

Well all the best guys, hope you have an awesome Chrismas and blessed New Year.

Re: 2011 Punting High's and Low's

The Tour de France also has to get a mention. On the individual stages, Brent got us off to a flyer with Tyler Farrar and between us we put up some big price stage winners inc EBH at 16's and Sammy Sanchez at 18's. I gave quite a bit back later in the tour backing Chavanel in the final week but it it was very profitable and gripping viewing / punting.  big_smile

Re: 2011 Punting High's and Low's

LOL Mackem I was just thinking last night that punters would have taken 1/3 the TDF got a mention between us.

Agree we got the Tour off to a flyer although my stakes and wins were small. Big disappointments were my big bets

Wiggins/Kloeden - had a strike on this and remember the feeling when as they replayed a crash all of the riders got up and rode away other than Team Sky. Sure enough they surrounded Wiggins who was sitting on the ground clutching his collar bone - His TDF over, my bet over? Well not quite because Kloeden abandoned nefore the end meaning money back - phew

I had take a massive 10/1 on Van Den Broeck to podium w/o Contador about 6 weeks before Le Tour - he looked frisky in the early stages but never got to show himself in the mountains crashing out along with Vino and a few others. I saw the news on the text feed on my cell phone in the Berg and was a broken man.

I also took a view against cavendish winning Green and it involved him not scoring on a stage with a short steep climb near the end - he stayed in touch though and having positioned myselkf on all of his rivals my book looked and stayed pretty ugly.

A few punting lows in Le Tour for me and not my best Tour but overall a definate highlight and perhaps the best Tour I have ever watched. My daily sms's and chats with Mackem were also a highlight.

Roll on 2012

Re: 2011 Punting High's and Low's

2011 was my best betting year since I first got involved in betting about 5 years ago. 2011 also saw my first spread bet and once I tasted spread betting I couldn't (and probably won't ever) stop. As Brent always say, it's very volatile, but thanks to rugby shirts betting I've had a very profitable year.

Some of my highs:

My biggest fixed odds bet of the year was a 33 unit bet on the Cheetahs to beat the Bulls over the season in the Currie Cup at evens.

One match I specifically remember during the World Cup was the France/Tonga game. After reading about all the problems in the French camp I went low on French supremacy at someting like 23 for half a unit, went low on match shirts and placed a bet on Tonga on the handicap. Tonga won the game and I showed a very nice profit for the game.

In the Super 15 when the Cheetahs played the Lions in Johannesburg if I remember correct the game started at about a choice game. I went high on Cheetahs supremacy and Cheetahs shirts. Riaan Viljoen (started at 15) scored a hat-trick and the Cheetahs beat the Lions good and I collected something like 60 units on the game.

Looking at the lows:

The Crusaders going so close and then not winning was a big low for me, having backed them.

When the Bulls played the Hurricanes at Loftus in the S15 (think it was against the Hurricanes) I went low on match shirts before the game for  1 unit. At half time only 1 try had been scored and I could have closed my bet for something like 15 units profit. I was greedy and believed the game would stay tight and didn't close the bet. Danie Rossouw came on with shirt number 19 and scored 2 tries and I ended up with a loss of something like 60 units on the game in the end. That game has made me close quite a few bets at half time for small profits which if I had left the bets I would have won a lot more.

The Cheetahs (or should I say Heinrich Brussouw's) win in Sydney was also a low for me as I went high on Waratahs supremacy.

My discipline also let's me down sometimes and after the Currie Cup I should have stopped betting for the year as rugby is my speciality, but I had a go at the cricket and soccer and gave back quite a few rand the past couple of months.

Looking forward to 2012 I can't wait for the Super 15 to start! Like Brent, I'm already heavily behind the Blues. I will also double my unit in 2012, thanks to a very profitible 2011.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this forum during the year and may you all enjoy the festive season with your families.

To the bookies, I'm going to hit you HARD in 2012!
