Horse racing thread 07th to 12th Feb

Full fixture list of racing again this weekend, hoping to try and find a few more winners than last week where some of the results were tough going. Did manage to come out up on week but overall there were some hard cards with quite a few surprise results.

Action starts with Vaal Tuesday and Greyville Tues night.

Your thoughts and picks more than welcome as always, let's try get a few forum winners this week.

Re: Horse racing thread 07th to 12th Feb

Racing from Vaal today, been a bit tied up but like the following ATC trebles later on card -

Race 5 - Kavanagh looks tough to beat here. At his best he's GR1 level, I feel de Kock has sorted out the horses past problems and his most recent win was impressive. Distance is perfect and will be at peak fitness for this run.

Race 6 – Bibbety Bobbety has 3rd run after break, two good outings so far and strong formlines from most recent race. Ferraris stable looks to be getting over their slump and I feel BB will be right there today.

Race 7 – Winking Jack coming right back into form, is a multiple winner who has gone well here before. Jockey/trainer combo has been fruitful in recent times, will go with WJ to edge his younger rivals.

Going ATC –

Kavanagh win
Bibbety Bobbery place (4 plc)
Winking Jack place

ATC @ 4.3/1

And then all the wins ATC 50/1

Break a leg with any punts.

Greyville PA 1x1x3x9x1x2x1. Treble castle queen win, she's a dime win  and ice pirate place 10/1. Also took she's a dime win, ice pirate each way, tiger  right win, ilha grande each way and music pass win. Added castle queen to the above 5 selections and taken a 6 leg ATC at over 200/1.

No joy with the ATC at Vaal, but like the following tonight, all each way –

Race 6 – Wicket Maiden @ 9/2 win, 8/10 places.
Race 7 – Lorne Cottage @ 13/1 win, 16/10 4 places.
Race 8 – Oak Ridge @ 7/1 win, 8/10 4 places.

Re: Horse racing thread 07th to 12th Feb

stiff D-Truth, a couple of MdK hot-pots going missing tonight, but stable did have an impressive winner in Winged Foot.

Managed places Lorn Cottage and then Oak Ridge won the last @ 11/1, didn't go in for another bite but 7/1 will do to end the night nicely, needed that.

Not a bad looking card for mid-week Kenilworth fare tomorrow, picks to follow.

Re: Horse racing thread 07th to 12th Feb

nice one Batrico. Kenilworth fancies -

Race 3
I can't see It's Exciting missing here @ 11/10. Last two runs very impressive - was slowly away in penultimate start, left with too much too do and ran on best for 3rd. Last run was beaten by a decent sort in Impressive Rock who again next time out. Formline is strong from IE last run, with Daily Flight also coming out to win well last week. Bass runner Aconcagua the danger but returns from an 8 week break. IE a short price but worth following.

Race 4
Magical Eve won well for the Goodforthegame forum last time out, it was a really eye-catching win that came with minimal effort. She's a fast improver and these Northern Hemishphere bred-horses can sometimes take a little while to reach full potential. Halfway to Heaven did beat her 3 runs back, however ME ran a good 2nd behind the talented Bambina Stripes next out before her maiden win. Fancy ME to follow up here and taking the 13/8 for the win.

Race 8
Dollar Bill Blues only just failed last time out by the smallest of margins and can get it right here at a decent looking 4/1 for the win. He beat the favourite Crown of Gold last time out and I can't see why he won't repeat that here. Course, distance suited with a perfect draw. The 8/10 a place also looks a solid bet and is worth backing.

Will also take all 3 in an ATC treble win treble @ around 25/1.

Break a leg with any punts.

Re: Horse racing thread 07th to 12th Feb

Soft going at Turffontein today, may be wise to keep the stakes on conservative side. Am looking for some value and playing just the following...

Race 4 – Leo’s Rush @ 9/1 e/w. Was slowly away last time from wide draw, look like needed run, takes on a much weaker field here and should improve. Was a good 4th on debut and looks like he has some ability, plum inside draw a big help here. Up Above a horse I put up last time but I feel he wants more ground. Will also put Leo’s Rush and Up Above into a swinger.

Race 5 – Rheims @ 11/10. Yes he’s a short price but he looks class above this field, ran a cracker last time out behind Grade 1 placed Beacon Flare. Form has been franked and he looks nicely handicapped here. Best bet of the day.

Race 7 – Grey Goose @ 10/1 e/w. Looks a typical Ferraris runner – wins maiden early in career, given a break, then allowed to slowly come back to best. Last two runs clearly not fit but should be close to best now being 3rd run after a break. Eye-catching jockey booking here with Delpech taking ride. Ferraris stable coming back into for nicely, will go each way GG.

dire set of results today, a R400k Pick 6 payout evidence of a very tough day for punters.

Will try end day on a high - treble the 3 MdK fancies - Master of Hounds, Bold Silvano, Mutahdee - 1 unit @ 15/1.

Re: Horse racing thread 07th to 12th Feb

Nice one on HtH Bat! Ended about even today, still kicking myself for not taking an each way on Nothingsweetaboutme yesterday, I picked  him at 16/1 but chickend out of the EW and just put a place on him, because my value EW's have been hurting me lately, lesson learn't!!!
I've been having a quick look at the cards for kennilworth for tomorrow, got stuck on race 6, im perplexed, Ramsdon has 5 horses in the race, out of 8 runners, and by my reckoning Vertical Drift should be the best of his runners, but he's put the worst of his jockey's on his back. By my calcs he should have the field, even Luno. i know its his first handicap, but he's running around carring 52.5 kgs, over 2500, looking at his maiden performances and the field he's facing, I just don't understand the decision to put a "rookie' on his back, unless he's planning on using VD to tire  another runner out upfront to allow Sylvildae a chance, but its only Sylvidae's 4th run, and he hasn't run anywhere close to 2500, and he's got the pick of the jockey's steering him around the circuit! Im confused! Maybe one of the more experienced punters here can clear things up for me?

Re: Horse racing thread 07th to 12th Feb

Hi Lodar,

Interesting one. On a formline through Dandymancan, it looks tough for VD, but VD does appear to be improving fast. Wouldn't be too put off by jockey booking - a trainer putting 5 in a race has some sort of strategy in mind.  wink  I loved Luno last time out as put him up for win, but not sure if he'll follow-up here, took a long time to get that second win. One things for certain - i'll be taking the field in this race for my Jackpot!

Re: Horse racing thread 07th to 12th Feb

Thanks South, going to put a small EW on VD. I've  still got his race vs Telepathy on the 4th Jan in mind, I picked Telepathy early at 25/1 for that race, my most confident value EW yet, based purely on past performance vs weight vs distance, and VD was right up there with her a good 6 or 7kgs heavier. I still remember thinking if VD gets his maiden and then races a lower handicap at 2500, carrying low weight - I have to back him.

No big bets for me today, just to much good rugby to get stuck into.

Just a small PA for Kenilworth:

6/1/6/3/7/6/7

Tough days racing I think up at Vaal so staying away.

Re: Horse racing thread 07th to 12th Feb

Hi racing fans,

Two cards on Saturday to get involved in, i'll be focussing on Kenilworth for my punting interest. In the same boat as KT, there's lots of rugby on today so horses taking a little bit of a back seat, but will try the following.

Race 5
La Belle Helene drops back to 1200m here and I feel this is the best trip for her. Her breeding makes her a sprinter and she was placed in some hot races over the 1200 early in her career. Form from her win was boosted this week with It's Exciting romping home. I feel this one is a touch overpriced and will go each way @ 16/1.

Race 7
Taking on the favourite here, prefer Nationhood from Ramsden stable. Get's a 2kg swing from PV on last run, been slowly coming into some form and a touch unlucky in a hot race last time out. 4/1 win and 5/10 places.

Race 9
He carries a big weight here but I give League Of Honour a chance here. He's run in some top company, excellent run last time out on Met day when flying at end to be beaten by just 1.65 lengths. On his day is top class and loves the Kenilworth 1600, another e/w punt for me @ 10/1.

Re: Horse racing thread 07th to 12th Feb

busy looking through Scotsville card but posting one pick now as race is coming up. In race 2 there's a hot pot favourite but I think 10/1 Special Henny is too big. Horse has best formlines of field by a mile, gets 4kg off back for appie Mohapi, who has a superb strike rate for a 4kg claimer and a number of winners for Lunn stable.

10/1 e/w lads, fancy this one.

Re: Horse racing thread 07th to 12th Feb

Close call with Special Henny but beaten into 2nd by a 100/1 shot! Favourite nowhere. 6/4 places a decent consolation.

My fancies for rest of card, all e/w -

Race 7 - Way Ward Storm @ 13/2. Loves Scotsville and give in ground, form from last two runs very strong.

Race 8 - Lizards Passion @ 7/1. On the upgrade, well weighted to give Unnanounced a big fight here based on formlines.

Race 10 - Hurricane Jen @ 11/2. Not brought down from Joburg for nothing, should be much fitter than last run and trip ideal.

And then 1 roughie, race 6 King Fernando @ 20/1.

cheers Batrico  smile , a solid day all round on ponies, winner and 3 x 2nd places. Jackpot a small loss, needed some bigger priced runners to win for it to pay.

Going to be a bit quiet from me on the horses next week owing to some work commitments, will put up the weekly thread for horse racing fans to share their thoughts, and will try and sneak in a couple value selections myself.
