Weekly horse racing thread
some decent racing ahead this week, culminating in the excellent Gauteng Guineas card at Turffontein on Saturday, where the likes of Silver Flyer, Potala Palace and Whiteline Fever clash in the male race, and the unbeaten Zim filly Control Freak tackles some of the best SA 3yr old female horses such as Katys Lane and Go Indigo.
In the meantime there's racing at Vaal on Tuesday as well as a night racing card from Greyville on Tuesday night to get us underway.
I've been starved of any punting the last 5 days while away so am looking forward to getting back in the saddle and hopefully finding some winners. Your own thoughts and fancies more than welcome as always.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Vaal Tuesday:
Not the best of cards so a limited involvement, just the two races to get involved in for me. Prices not yet up from bookmakers so will update once available.
Vaal Race 3
Possibly one of the weakest maiden fields i've seen for a while, but on her last run Mer De Misque could be the one to be with here. Supported on debut when 7th, she's been allowed to slowly pick up race experience and looked a far more decent animal when 4th last run, beaten just 1.75 lengths. Continued improvement should give MDM a top chance in this sort of field, and she looks a decent each-way punt. I'll throw in another possible improver into the mix for swingers - Woodland Fire hasn't been disgraced in her short career to date and could be the one to give MDM a strong challenge.
Bet: Mer De Misque win @ 4/1
Bet: Swinger Mer De Misque / Woodland Fire
Vaal Race 5
Returnee was an ultra impressive winner last time out and one that i'd put up on the forum after seeing him run an eye-catching 3rd behind the talented Anka Man before then. He takes on a weak field here, and if he continues his marked improvement he will be right there. The 1400 trip will suit and has a plum draw on the Vaal turf track where both his 2 wins have come. The only danger I see is Finvarra, who looks well in at the weight on his runs behind Eurosilver and Whiteline Fever. Finvarra did have his chance 2 runs back in this sort of company and only managed 3rd, so i'll stick with Returnee to continue to improve and will take the win as well as the boxed exacta with Finvarra.
Bet: Returnee win @ 3/1
Bet: Boxed Exacta Returnee / Finvarra

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Shot South for the excellent write-up. I'm in the same boat as you regarding hectic work commitments, but just came up for a quick "breather."
I love that Returnee bet @ 3/1 - was very impressive when winning last time - in fact I posted this one in the horses to watch thread (neglecting this one a bit recently). My swinger and trifecta horse is Cartwheel @ 12/1.
Two value horses might be Ruby King @ 7/1 and Pimp my Ride @ 4/1, simply for the fact that they both have incredibly high sand MR and now revert to the turf. RK has a sand MR of 94 and hasn't run too badly on turf in last 2, previously run just over 4l behind grade 1 placed Sidestep in maidens. RK is always supported in betting and may be competitive on turf off a MR of 70. PmR has a sand MR of 83 and races off a turf rating of 60. Best runs on turf have been placed runs in maidens, so not very inspiring, but meets a weak field and Lerena takes ride. Swinger horse may be Al Felon, who might eventually crack a 2nd win after 3 years - Amatol and Wyatt West won the weekend which may suggest AF jinx might end.
I advise caution with the Vaal card as it looks tricky. Saturday racing looks very appetizing as South has alluded to.
Good punting

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
great call with Pimp My Ride charles, an easy winner!
Sadly I showed a bit of rustiness on punts today, with this in mind I won't be putting up many selections for Greyville and about to head off to the track now so not much time. However hopefully these two can make it a good night out (if the rain holds off!)-
Race 6 - Inner Temple e/w @ 8/1. Sticking with this one having punted it last few races.
Race 7 - Rocky Bay e/w @ 7/1. Very handy weight and a promising sort.
Break a leg with any punts lads.

My three fancies for Kenilworth:
Best Bet: Rain Gal @ 13/10
Value Bets: Lola Bud @ 7/1 and 1.54/1 a place and The Real Nick @ 7/1 and 13/10 a place
Sticking these onto my two fancies for Turffontein Saturday:
Slumdogmillionaire @ 7/2 (win) - can't see this price lasting
UptotheMoon @ 10/1 (each/way) - a real value prospect
Good punting

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Cheers Charles, actually turned out to be a good night at greyville despite those 2 picks going missing!
Arrived just before 2nd race and went for a small e/w punt on kings style, wasn't expecting much and was shocked by win, paid R29 on tote, needless to say the evening was paid for by then. Had two more winners in HEart at 10/1 and torro bay at 14/10, so the food and drinks were on me.
Was impressed with greyville - friendly service, plenty staff to help with any needs, and a bigger turnout than I expected. First time I'd been to greyville in many years and it's still got something special.
Break a leg with those picks next few days, I'm shifting to more of a rugby focus this weekend, but will try and find some time on the holiday for a few picks on the horses. Love your Slumdog pick, good spot!

Shot South, glad to hear you had a splendid time and well done on your winners. Being on the course is always a magic event and certainly tops the mundane online betting and Tellytrack experience.
I think Super Rugby is going to dominate all of our betting budgets the next couple of months and even the Triple Crown/Tiara might have to take a back seat.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Tough today at Kenilworth, with a number of serious roughies winning at long odds. Slightly disappointing outcome for me with RN just missing out on 3rd place to the favourite by 0.5l and RG racing very green and jockey doing horse no favours by checking a number of times in the home stretch. Only light point LB running second, who did offer some value @ 15/10 a place (S/P of 9/10), but insufficient to end in the black for the day.
Tough card at Vaal tomorrow (as usual). My main bet is an ATC place bet @ 5/2:
Acapella
Pacific Destiny
Flight Zone
I"ll be playing a few swingers and boxed exactas with the above in their respective races: A with the Tarry favourite, Exceptional Dreams; PD with a regular GftG post, Super Pursuit and FZ again with the Tarry favourite, Terra Marriana.
My roughie for the day:
Prime Mover @ 16/1 and 3.7/1 a place
Value bet:
Tony's Tipple @ 8/1 win and 18/10 a place
I'm keeping stakes low, saving the pennies for Turffontein and of course, SuperRugby.
PS: Tarry/Fradd the combo to follow with a number of short-priced favourites.
Good punting.

stiff yesterday Charles, think bookies have done well the last 2 meetings this week, plenty upsets.
I'm like the following in Dubai today - will play wins only the shorter priced of these and places plus smaller wins on the bigger priced runners and a small ATC win bet.
Disa Leader @ 6/1
Jardim @ 7/2
Pimpernel @ 4/6 win only
Rerouted @ 5/2

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Is anyone rating Enjoyment for race 3 tomorrow? I reckon it could finally be her chance for a win. Slightly worried about Burlaine Oasis though on his second run, difficult to tell how he'll like the longer distance, and Enjoyment's last 6 runs have been at Fairview. In Loco Parentis looks like he might battle with 60kgs, but its also his fav distance. I've gone with Enjoyment, hopefully she runs to her full potential!

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Having a second look at race 2 now, was looking at Air of Grandeur, drawn wide, with a lot of competition, but Pindan Blue caught my attention, fairly decent last run, coming off a ten week break, with a decent jockey on her back, could be some value there. Might take an EW, will have another look in the morning.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Lodar, I don't rate race 3 - I reckon it's wide open - these maiden distance races in P.E are known to throw the occassional roughie. If you look past ILP, anything can win it. Tough for BO to win in only second run over 2400m, but ran well first time when well supported and may start off a glorious weekend for the unfashionable sire, Tamburlaine, with CF and KL disputing favouritism in the Fillies Guiness. Enjoyment might be competitive, certainly gets the trip and stamina not in doubt. Tough race which I'll be avoiding - I think there are better betting races.

Lodar, you've read my mind - those are my two fancies in the race - definite swinger bet for me. AoG on last 2 runs in WC should walk it, but no certainties in P.E and as you rightly pointed out, drawn next to the airport. That run behind Hill 54 has yielded 3 wins, but you can't look past that wide draw over the tight course, which must be a disadvantage. 7/10 a place (4 places) AoG looks like a decent bet to me.

Nice to tip a winner again, with my main bet, the ATC place landing @ 5/2 Never in doubt with a win and x2 second places.
VB and Roughie still hacking around the course, but managed to keep powder dry with low stakes. Got some consolation with winning swinger bets and handy swinger dividend of R1.9 and exacta R6.2 in the lucky last. Pacific Dynasty nice win bet @ 5/2 (which I posted in the horses to follow thread a while back). Fradd/Tarry x3 wins, so hopefully the forumites picked up something by following the formbook.
Looking to strike again tomorrow at Arlington and build some winning momentum approaching the weekend.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Hoping that lightning can strike twice in 2 days and, therefore, my main bet @ Arlington is an ATC place bet @ 3.9/1 WSB:
Air of Grandeur (4 places) - despite the shocking draw, the WC form hard to ignore and I'm hopeful that Teetan can bring this from far back on a tight course to run into the first 4
Jervis - very consistent but just can't seem to head in front on the line, hoping for usual honest run and that consistency will be rewarded
Go Diego Go - a winning tip on GftG last time and sticking with this one and hoping to follow up
My two roughies:
DancingintheDesert @ 20/1 and 3.8/1 place, last chance for this one who showed real promise earlier in career, good record over course/distance and has gradullay dropped from MR 77 to a mark of 68, which may make this one more competitive. I'll throw in the swinger with GDG.
Florist Rose @ 30/1 and 4.8/1 place (4 places), also showed plenty of promise early, including 2nd in grade 3 race off a MR 93, but obviously hasn't trained on. Two useful runs in PE over course/distance, but has disappointed when tried over Fairview 1200m, drops back to minimum distance, which should suit better.
Good punting

I only just about broke even at Dubai, strategy of bigger strikes on the places paid off but still not the best of results, but live to punt horses another day.
Pulling for the picks today, not had chance to glance card, just been watching the ruggers this morning and swearing at two very incompetent refs!

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Plenty top racing this weekend, looking to get far more involved than last two weeks, like the following across the 2 Sat cards.
Ken race 3
Crystal Glitter e/w @ 9/2 - returns from lay-off but reported to be well. Has superb formline from last run - beaten just 0.1 length by Impressive Rock who has realed off 3 good wins since on the bounce.
Ken race 6
Premium Wood e/w @ 4/1. A very easy winner last time out when tipped on Goodforthegame, I think PW is going to become a nice sort. Has Jet Explorer to beat but am happy to take my chances on the double the price of PW.
Ken race 8
I fancied Jeppe's Reef for the big stayers race on Met day however he was a late withdrawal, and i'll stick with him again. Has had some hardluck stories in a few of his runs, has a plum draw and looks a lurker at a decent price. Each way @ 10/1.
Also putting all 3 into ATC place bet @ 17/2.
Turf race 2
The very expensive to follow Alessandria gets one more chance from he here. Marcus takes ride, will prefer Turf standside track. One for doubles and trebles as only 4/6 in betting.
Turf race 5
Hawker Hunter e/w @ 11/2. Highly regarded by stable, has 3rd run after lay-off and will be cherry ripe. Can give the de Kock runners a real run in my opinion and there's been some early money already for this Ferraris runner.
Turf race 6
I make Solo Traveller a MASSIVE runner in the Hawaii stakes @ 7/1. I put him up last time out were he caught the eye running on nicely for 3rd, he will can come on leaps and bounds from that run and has a touch of class. Don't be too put off by the jockey bookings with AD taking the ride on Kavanagh - Mawing will give ST a good ride and I have a sneaky suspicion this is possibly the best of the MdK quartet.
Turf race 7
A top class field for ther fillies Guineas and i'm going to stick with the de Kock stable again here. Bluroute was narrowly beaten last two runs, the prior when 2nd behind Katys Lane who she meets again here. Has got a perfect draw in this big field and despite only one career win she's never been out the top 2. The one to beat is the much talked about Zim filly Control Freak who's won 8 out of 8 and deserves the utmost respect. I'll go Bluroute e/w @ 13/2 and swingers with Control Freak.
Turf race 8 (Gauteng Guineas)
What a classy looking race, with so much top 3 year olds it's really tough to seperate a number of runners. But i'm going to go against the betting market here and will throw in two runners who could be suggested as being stable second string runners, but i'm not convinced they're far off their stablemates - Heavy Metal @ 25/1 from the Tarry yard, and Brooks Club @ 25/1 from the van Zyl yard. Both had excuses last time out and both will love this distance.
Turf race 9
At 12/1 i rate Magical a lively outsider. Had superb early career form and very decent record at Turffontein. Ran a very decent 8th in the Summer Cup behind Dancewiththedevil on penultimate start. Last run might be best ignored, he's far better than that, and 12/1 in this small field seems a touch on the big side, despite carrying top-weight.

Hope the forumites helped themselves earlier in the week to the 7/2 - I see SDM is into 2/1 - no guarantee of the win in a highly competitive field, but I'm satisfied I snapped up the value. I'm sticking with UttM, despite between drawn next to the highway, I've pressed this one @ 12/1 and 18/10 a place (4 places).

Shot South for an excellent write-up of the racing tomorrow. After my shocker at Arlington today, I might just have to follow you on all your suggested bets.
Over and above what you mentioned, I also like the following horses at Turffontein:
Tresco @ 6/1 and 0.96/1 a place is a value bet for me
Snowdon @ 11/2 and 12/10 a place

SDM (win)

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
I agree Charles, not one bet paid today for me. Ate up all my profit off Margaret Court yesterday plus a bit extra. Quite happy for Ok Corral finally getting a win though. Think I might also go with Souths picks for tomorrow, plus ur liking for Snowdon, fancied him over Kavanagh last week, but wasn't confident enough to take the bet, one of those time you wish you were able to kick yourself in the head! Just wondering about MDKs Solo Traveller in that race.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Yeah, Lodar, definitely a forgettable betting day at the race track and on the rugby pitches, but looking to bounce back tomorrow.
All the feature races look intriguing tomorrow, especially the Hawaii Stakes, with any one of 6 horses who can win it! I just favour Snowdon because of fitness levels, ideally suited to distance, Ferraris stable return to form and of course, the Striker factor. Not too confident though and place bets a safer betting option for me - South's fancy, ST a serious runner being a grade 1 winner.

You gotta be kidding me - you can't tell me that Neisius was trying on Depardieu at Kenilworth - he did everything not to win the race - in fact, he wasn't trying too hard at the death and almost got nabbed for 3rd place, much to the possible dismay of P.A backers. At least at the casino the dealers try their best to deal you poor cards!

morning lads, sorry no replies yesterday was travelling all day. Some nice results and some very near misses!
Charles well done on Tresco that was a lovely price! Stiff on the ATC but a great effort nonetheless.
I had a weird day - lots of close calls which could have left me well in the black if 1 or 2 others went in, as it stands I was only slightly up on the horses, mainly thanks to the place payouts on Brooks Club and Heavy Metal.
Still shocked by the deKock winner of the Guineas, never gave that a second look. As it stands de Kock ruled again and was just 0.05 lengths from scooping all of the graded races yesterday, some performance once again.
Will need to watch a replay of Solo Traveller race, a touch dissapointed with that run.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Well done, Batrico, you certainly did better than me.
I'm not one for post-mortems, but I was amazed by the results of the 3y-o feature races. I can't imagine that the form will stand the test of time. Golden Chateau, the 4 choice MDK horse, @ 100/1 winning is mind-boggling. GC was soundly beaten by Glorious Jet by 6l last time, who was not good enough to make the Guiness field and previously was soundly beaten by E-Jet and Silver Flyer and 3 others horses all in Saturday's field) by over 4l over course and distance. Brook's Club a regular post on the GftG racing thread by myself and South has been disappointing to follow and yesterday out of the blue runs second. Studying the form this seemed unlikely because BC was soundly beaten by Pomodoro by 4.5l and had Heavy Metal in front of it. My choice, SDM ran a decent race and at the top of the straight was slightly outpaced but ran on well and is definitely one to watch over Classic and Derby distance. Backed in from 7/2 to 18/10 and obviously van Zyl stable elect, yet BC beats him home. Heavy Metal, another South favourite ran a cracking race and justified the Fradd stable confidence in beating very good stable companions WLF and P home. Certainly a horse to follow.
Fillies race review to follow.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
I can't seem to load my comments about the fillies race, but the bottom line is that UttM got a very poor ride tactically by Marwing, taking the horse to the front from a wide draw. Ilha Bela unlucky in defeat and on breeding looks like a top Oaks horse. Hidden Beauty ran on well but on breeding the 1600m might be her maximum trip. Control Freak and Bluroute close up behing the top 3 and both will be very competitive in Gauteng and KZN feature races.

Will need to watch a replay of Solo Traveller race, a touch dissapointed with that run.
Shot South, I was very chuffed with Tresco - picked her up @ 7/1 and 12/10 a place - she just missed out on the final field for Fillies feature race and I thought she would be tough to beat and a definite value bet. Snowdon also ran well in second behind top 1400m horse and place dividends complemented by swinger bet with Kavanagh. Thereafter, it went pear-shaped - no need to talk about the poor ride on UttM and SDM ran on well - should be a serious contender for 2 remaining legs of the TC.
South, pity about ST, maybe second run blues, but a horse that really caught my eye was Galileo's Destiny, who returned from a long resr since July last year and was just off the placed horses over a distance short of his best. I'll load this one on horses to follow thread.
I'm not getting too involved at Scottsville today, but Marcus definitely jock to follow.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
I know a bit of a late post, but I fancy Felix the Cat in the 4th at Scottsville - distance seems short of her best, but tough 1200m might suit. Top class grade 1 form over 1400/1600m and a bit of a rest, but I have a feeling her class will pull her through. Highest MR and best weighed horse in race. I'm having a small dip @ 10/1 and 17/10 a place.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
I can't seem to catch these horses right - despite only 52kg FtC hopelessly outpaced - race won by 16/1 stable companion. Very frustrating.
My only other bets for the day:
Marcus double - Northern Emperor and Black is Black @ 18/10 (5 units) and treble with Radio Waves thrown in @ 5.4/1. (1.5 units)
Swinger bets: NE with Chill (3.5 units) and BiB with Albert's Daughter (5 units). Straight exacta: NE x C (0.5 units) and BiB x AD (1 unit)
Good punting

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
don't know what's going on today Charles, bomb results all over, mad tote payouts (winner of 3rd was 40/1 SP with bookies but paid R8.20 a win...and R8.40 a place?!!!
Was getting ready for first punt of day but not sure now.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
In the spirit of the upsets so far on card, I'm going to throw in a big roughie here - Diamantere @ 25/1 in the 5th.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Yeah, South, with 2 places only on the tote, sometimes throws up an anomoly.
Hoping for normaility and the form book to return and of course for Master Marcus to bring home a few favourites.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
formbook came to the rescue Charles! Nice work matey. Anyone who has shown profit on Scotsville has done well today, I had just that 1 small 25/1 e/w punt, finished 5th so 1 out the places, which was a similar story to yesterday. But no damage done and still up a bit on weekend horses.
Will be intetresting to see how the formbook holds up next week now.

Re: Weekly horse racing thread
Shot South, despite the earlier setback, I struck back with vengeance, thanks to the Marcus double Both swingers struck @ R2.3 and R1.9 respectively and the R6.1 exacta in the last was a decent bonus. A very tidy 18 unit profit for the day.
