The Open Championship at St Andrews

The Open Championship at St Andrews

This week we have golfs 3rd Major of the year which is just the tonic to get my punting juices flowing after the World Cup.

I am already looking forward to Sunday lying on the couch with the screen split between the golf and the Tour de France.

The Open takes place at St Andrews the home of golf and while I appreciate the tradition I personally find this links coure pretty boring from a viewing perspective and I am hoping the wind blows to give us some much needed drama.

Tiger Woods is favourite on a course which he has previously owned but there ar a host of challengers, some home grown and some from around the World who will be making their presence felt.

Research for the preview is nearly complete and link and picks will follow soon.

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

One memory I have from last year is buying Tom Watsons finishing position after 2 rounds. I thought there was no way the old boy could hang on but how wrong I was and but for a poor approach to 18 which led to a drop he would have won it.

Anyways I am looking for revenge over the old boy this year and will take 4 units on him missing the cut at 11/10 with World Sports Betting

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

Going for a a big price winner strategy this week, looking for the Hamilton/Curtis type lurkers! My bets:

Ross Fisher - 2 unit ew @ 50/1
Henrik Stenson - 0.75 unit ew @ 100/1
Soren Hansen - 0.5 unit ew @ 175/1
Ricky Barnes - 0.5 unit ew @ 180/1
Trevor Immelman - 0.5 unit ew @ 200/1
Steve Marino - 0.5 unit ew @ 250/1

Was also tempted by Ernie, think he's a solid top 5 bet for sure.

Break a leg guys, let's hope the course plays really tough!

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

A pretty slow start by my lads with Ernie leading the way at -3 a full 6 shots off the pace.

A few of the other frum picks especially the outsiders going well though.

At one point the leaderboard looked consisted of nearly all of my regulars who I have left alone this week - Watney, O'Hiar, D Johnson and Mahan  sad

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

Have anybody looked at tommorows 18 hole matchups or three balls? Would like some insight.

I like Villegas to beat Stenson over 18 at 0.9 at Betx. Villegas looked good today.

I also fancy Robert Allenby to beat Charl Schwartzel over 18 holes at 0.9 at Betx

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

Stenson looked pretty solid himself yesterday.Ended at -4 i think. So might be tight between those two.

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

Morning Gentlemen,

I think young McIlroy has the game at this course to hold out.

If I was looking for players to beat him come Sunday my money would be on Lee Westwood, Ross Fisher or Trevor Immelman.

Enjoy, I think it will be interesting this weekend.

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

amazing low scores yesterday, a Saffer right at the top now but certainly not expected.

I think a strategy could be the match bets on virtual 2-balls - taking some guys teeing off this morning over the late afternoon tee-offs, as the wind is expected to blow strong later today.

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

from what we've seen so far, the back 9 is playing very tough today, and anyone like me who has most picks teeing off this afternoon should be worried.  sad

I can't see anyone getting past near Oosthuizen by end of today and don't think McilRoy will pass him, good on the lad, he's put himself in a great position.

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

Wow, imagine playing in that wind. Louis leads by 5 and some guys have not even teed off. Been off once coz wind was too strong and I think they may go off again. Some big scores coming if they stay on and the wind stays!

Louis as low as 9/4 overnight, would be a great a story if he can pull this off. I have McDowell in contention  big_smile

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

Watson bet arrived (sorry Tom) but a bad tournament for me and none of my picks bar Stricker who is miles back are playing today.

I have lumped my Watson winnings onto O'Hair for a Top 5 at 5/1 with WOS

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

I have also taken 5 units on the lowest score being -12 or better with Mbet - forecast looks decent and while only Louis is there now it means he just has to play out in par (easier said than done) or any of the others can come out of the back.

As you can see I am desperate for a Sunday interest!

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

Have gone for Tiger as top American at Sportsbet 18/10. Saw some flashes of brilliance from Tiger under difficult conditions yesterday, and think he's very close to finding his form.

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

as much as I'd hate to see this happen to a Saffer, i think Oosthuizen will come right back to pack and don't see him leading at end of 3rd round. Pressure on him today will be huge, but best of luck to him anyway!

I've got Barnes in the hunt at -5. He was -9 with 6 to play yesterday and dropped 4, could have been so much better.  sad

Some good viewing ahead, looking for some interest on the 2-balls.

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

Going large on Louis today. I'm being ruled by quite a bot of sentimental patriotism, and hopefully backed up by a bit of science as well...

The Patriotism is obvious - a South African winning the British Open on Mandela Day just feels like a script written for Saffers.

The Science:  in 7 of the 11 post war Opens at St Andrews the 3rd round leader has hung on to win. The course is notoriously difficult to chase on. On the 4 occasions where the winner came from behind, only John Daly ever managed to overhaul a final day deficit of more than 3 shots, when he came from 4 off the pace in 1995 (same final day deficit as this year). All Louis has to do is shoot par today, and the tournament *should* be his - heck, think he can even get away with a +1 or +2 round if the conditions become tough.

It's his tournament to loose... unless of course he has a Jean Van de Velde, or Dustin Johnson like meltdown..., which seems to happen more often than not in Majors these days. Still gonna be ruled by my heart on this though - gonna back Louis to make Mandela Day memorable with a 5 unit strike at 9/10. Hoping Tiger comes to the party on the last day to be the top US player, and it will be a good Open for me.

So far so good Syba, pulling hard for Louis and hoping O'Hair can sneak into the Top 5!

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

Louis "who"????

Not a mention of the lad by anyone in the tipping prior to the competition starting, and I am not surprised. Good luck to the lad always nice to see a Saffer win a major.

Brent I rest my case son, Golf betting for desperado's and John Edward.  You need to "see" something to make a profit  roll

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

Well played Louis and good on you for showing faith in him Syba.

Watched the back 9 and was really impressed. The Open has certainly thrown up a few surprise winners over the years butI have a feeling Oosthuizen has a good career ahead of him.

He had shown glimpses of what he could do this year bit nothing that would have seen me find him at odds of around 150/1.

cool  Mb not completely cat.I've made a pretty profit earlier this year following Brent and since then have had some decent success on my own.Including the Open.Had Stenson coming in as a place bet and the Goose just missing out at 6th.50% picks in the top 10 out of more than a 150 compettitors cant be all luck!......or is that just wishfull thinking??  wink

Re: The Open Championship at St Andrews

also glad Stenson was solid today Wolf! cool  Had 0.75 unit ew on him at 100/1 so nice little profit for the tournament, plus Goose did the business yesterday in his 2-ball.

Well done Oosthuizen  beersmiley , great win, very humble and he's joined some great Saffers in winning The Open.
