Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Hey guys

Very early i know, but seen a few h-caps for the game hovering around the -3.5 mark for NZ, and in my opinion, as hard is it is to bet against my own side in Jo burg, i can't see us getting wihtin 4 points!! For me, 10 units NZ -3.5 Bet-ex, great bet!!

An early call, but i expect this to move quite soon. Far too much crap going on in the camp and selection blunders for SA which i'm sure will steal the spotlight again!!

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Agree muzza it's hard to not see that as value with the way the All Blacks have been playing. I'm a bit worried about the whole feeling around this game, which makes me hold off taking that NZ -4. The 100th test for Smitty, the sell-out Jhb crowd, the ground itself, the wounded bok - I really need to try and seperate heart from head for this 1 and i'm struggling already with 10 days still to go!! lol

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Climb in at -3.5. I doubt that hcap will last. NZ have everything in their favour except the venue. Smit's 100th cap is more emotion we don't need. Kiwi have the mental edge, are playing better footy (while bending the rules better too) and we still have selections crap and corridor talk of splits.
Kiwi to win by more than 4 is a great bet, even if it hurts my heart!

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Hi Muzza, we have just modified the heading of this thread to include week 7 of the Currie Cup and keep the local rugby under one umbrella.

Currie Cup Betting update on site http://www.goodforthegame.co.za/rugby/c … pdate.html

Sharks have the bookies confused with their price ranging from 2/1 to 3/1.

All Blacks still -3.5 although GreatOdds go -5 now

Guys I know we have got into the habit of not talking too much about the handicaps until the boookmakers price up these days  wink  but I am interested to see where the line in the Sharks v WP game is set?

Personally I am expecting Sharks +2.5 - any opinions?

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

I was wondering the same thing this morning Brent.

On the form of the tournament in general, WP should still be favourites to overturn the Sharks. Yet, on the form of the weekend the Sharks were clearly the more impressive of the two (even keeping in mind the vast difference in opposition). I think Province will be much improved after a lack lustre performance and I believe they should be slight favourites. That said, Sharks are always tough in the tank and Beast and Bismarck could make all the difference. I don't see the bookmakers going much worse than the Sharks +2 or 3.

Still think I'll be backing my boys for an outright win as well. Come on the Sharks!

I'll be piling into Sharks if they're + anything, got a good feeling they'll take this WP team on Sat.

I don't understand why the game is right after Bok game though, should have arranged it other way round, or played  with 2 hours between?

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

WSB out first, no suprises there? Mbet - what happened to the Monday caps?

Mine vs WSB
Cheetahs v Leopards (Cheetahs -25.5) (-28.5) out by 3
Bulls v Griquas (Bulls -10.5) (-14.5) out by 4
Pumas v Lions (Lions -12.5) (-12.5) spot on
Sharks v WP (Choice)(-1.5) out by 1.5

Interesting ...

Who thinks BetX, VoltBet etc. will be identical?

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Credit to WSB - the fact that they are out first is great and their handicaps being within a few points of ours is just an indication that they have given it some thought I think. A mate and I often price up together (ahead of the bookies) and we are generally within 2-3 points of each other.

I think we are also very lucky in this country - from what I have seen in the UK the rugby handicaps come out very late. Keep it up lads and other bookies lets see you challenging these guys!

As a matter of interest mine vs WSB are as follows:

Cheetahs v Leopards (Cheetahs -27.5) (-28.5) out by 1
Bulls v Griquas (Bulls -13.5) (-14.5) out by 1
Pumas v Lions (Lions -14.5) (-12.5) out by 2
Sharks v WP (+2.5)(-1.5) out by 4

Based on that no surprises that I think WP +1.5 is the early play and I am on for 10 units.

heheh Hankrick!  Hope they have the Bok game on the big screen or something at the Shark Tank, at least if Boks win the WP supporters will have something to cheer about Sat, but that's all!  wink  laughsmiley

Don't think i'm going to see any Sharks +, will probably still take them @ -1.5 but will see how the other boys price up.

Voltbet are the new kids on the betting block and they have NZ at 7/10 to beat the Boks. Best price I have seen!

Province +1.5 is the bet of the weekend South  cool

Really think they should have had the demolition of the Sharks at 3pm, would have been ideal build up to the Test  laughsmiley

Voltbet out with their CC handicaps:

Bulls -16.5
Cheetahs -30.5
Lions -11.5
Sharks -0.5

I have taken Griquas +16.5 and Lions -11.5. Have also taken WP +1.5 at WSB.

Regarding the Bok game. I am very undecided. Made my mind up that the All Blacks would win last week, but after I have seen the Bok side yesterday I'm not so sure anymore. Really like the changes made to the Bok side.

Hi Hanrick yes its the first poll and it will be interesting to see what the GFTG'ers fancy as the weekends best bet.

You can vote for your bet of the week to the right of the rugby previews and home page.

The first Currie Cup preview is up and I am going Lions minus and will also be looking for points and shirts - quotes dependant of course.

I am not convinced that New Zealand are home and hosed here and I make the Boks a tentative call at +4.5

My main focus (surprise surprise) will be on the spreads and I fancy we could be in for some action in this one.

lol, loving the mini-rivalry this weekend on Sharks WP game, difference of opinion is good and makes for even more shouting at the tv in the southpaw household!  laughsmiley

Also leaning towards Boks Brent, maybe the bet will be Boks to win by a couple points, will be a decent price.

South (or should I say Shark?  big_smile ), Mbet also has the Sharks at evens. In fact Mbet has this as a choice game, but rather than giving 9/10 the pair, which most bookmakers would do when it's a choice game, they have both teams at evens.

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Hey Guys

I can't help but feel there is far too much "heart" at play in some of the predictions in line with the Boks vs NZ.

Some early calls were suggested in the forum backing NZ on the cap, and to be honest if I thought they were sound bets then, after seeing the team selection for the weekend for the Boks and NZ, I am now fully invested and can't see this SA side getting within 10 points. Now before you start ranting just hear me out!

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Cont,

Once again, we have NO orthodox fetcher, and have three "running" loose forwards. I mean did we learn nothing from the three previous tests!!! Look at the difference Potgieter made when he came on, and how can we expect to compete with NZ when we can't compete on the ground and at least look to slow there ball down to stop there great backline running a mock!? And ask yourselves this, how would Australia have fared without Pocock's stand-out performances in the past two tests?

Moving on, let's not even get started on the backline, where we have a back three with as much form between them as my left thumb, and against the likes of

Muliaina, Jane, and Rokocoko, I can't see us winning that battle either.  And despite being happy with the selection of Hougaard at scrum-half, as I definitely think he deserves the chance, it is yet another combination that is untested and the last thing we need is a scrum-half, fly-half combo that hasn't had time to gel. Especially considering we will be expecting our whole backline, who have looked average at best this tri-nations, to be running off them.

Lastly, if we take a look at the bench, I still can't help but shake my head. Not much depth at all and some selections I can only wonder about.  On NZ side,  a very strong bench with plenty of depth in key positions as well as some players in good form looking to make a name for themselves.

Yes we have the home ground advantage, yes the game is now at altitude, yes this will be Smit's 100th game, BUT has so much changed in the past two weeks that we are now expecting this miraculous turnaround? Don't get me wrong, I would love a good competitive game and for SA to come out tops, but if I'm putting money down and betting with my "head", It hurts me to say, but NZ are better in EVERY single position, and although we will all be hoping for a spirited performance, I can't see it being enough and I am strongly on NZ by more than 5!

First with the head, and then with the heart!!

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Split Forum weekend!
Currie Cup:
Best defense vs the Best Attack - one thing wins Rugby matches and that is defense wink I am big on the WP +1.5 at BetX It will be a smashing game and only pity is that I will be on the Train coming back from Soccer City, sad that the Boks lost, but happy I had cash on NZ wink
Tri Nations:
Agree with your views Muzza! And Think 8 changes is massive. Its at an awesome venue though and their will be monster support so our boys will be up for it. That AB side is the best international side in the world at present and their bench will be the difference. Got a bet down with VoltBet with the AB's at 7/10 , and the AB's -3.5 and may take a small punt of SA at HT, NZ at FT at 11/2. As I see us slowing the game down and grinding out a narrow lead until the 60 minute mark where we will see it open up and the AB's get some late tries

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Wow the forum really is split this weekend - perhaps a sign that we should tread cautiously although judging by the posts at looks as though the boys are all putting their money where their mouth is - I love it!

One factor which I am taking into account with the Bok game is fatigue. I could be wrong but I just felt we were a yard off the pace in New Zealand and that players like Smit and Matfield looked very tired. A few weeks off and I am expecting a far more lively performance although having said that my handicap call is a weak one and as per preview I am looking for points, glorious points!

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Yip I reckon this weekend is pretty tough with the Lions standing out as the best bet on the handicap. Could be lots of points too although I'm sure the relevant traders will be expecting much of the same. Griquas are simply a horrible team away from home and it's hard to back them even against an average Bulls team. The Cheetahs should score a lot of points against the Leopards but it's a game I'll avoid. The Sharks game has everyone licking their lips and my early feel is for the Sharks in the hope that their pack might just be too good.

The Boks game is a potential minefield of differing opinions. Early in the week I had hoped for +5 to 6 points and even fancied the Boks for a win. With -3.5 the Kiwi's I was swayed towards them. Then I thought about the time off for the Boks and if it would benefit them or make them a little rusty, so after much deliberation I feel they'll probably be better off for it and I'm firmly in the Bok camp once more. Having said that I'm not too convinced about our bench and in particular Butch James  but to be honest I'm not sold on the true potential of this AB side either and reckon they can be opposed with a fair amount of confidence.

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Hey guys, Thanks for all your contributions, I have been reading with lots of interest.

SA vs NZ - At first I didn't give us a hope against the ABs. Now I've been thinking. Here's a list of factors :- Home, 90000+ fans, Historical moment, Altitude, better selection, rest, McCaw cheating exposed. Morne Steyn will also be much more comfortable kicking at altitude. I think the Boks will win a very close game.

Sharks vs WP - Going by last weeks form, the Sharks should win this one. The Sharks have improved significantly since they last beat the Bulls at home. WP couldn't score a try against a mediocre Bulls side and nearly got beaten. WP are definitely missing some of their key players whereas the Sharks have got a lot more depth and will be fielding one of their strongest sides.

Coil having read that summary I reckon you should be calling a no bet in this one  wink  Seriously though you have summed it up nicely - you really can make a case for either side.

Great to hear from you CapeSharky!

The point you make about the cheating is a good one. Refs will claim not to listen to whats happening in the media but the stats that have come out this week have been interesting and I would not be surprised to see the AB's get pinged that bit more often than usual this week and that could be all that the Boks require.

Here is the Preview for the Cheetahs and Bulls games.

Not being televised I was not planning to get involved but I must admit I am now leaning towards the Cheetahs and am quite strong on the Bulls.

The double Cheetahs -28.5 and Bulls -13.5 is 3/1 at World of Sport

http://www.goodforthegame.co.za/rugby/c … games.html

Here is the link to the rugby preview with Gareth and Sean http://gftg.podomatic.com/entry/2010-08 … 9_55-07_00

Gareth the editor at SARugby.com has always impressed with his rugby knowledge but it is mazing to hear how he is talking like a punter these days - this man is a convert for sure  wink

GO have wp+3 so I got some, I am quite involved here !!!

Interesting that the forum support is split on wp/sharks and hence the punting is split.
You could make a case for WP, the Sharlks, the Boks and the AB's to win this weekend which must be a bookies wet dream!

I will not be moved. WP and All Blacks weekend

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Only game I'm not betting on is the Cheetahs/Leopards game, but taking the Cheetahs on Sportspicks. Bets down for me in the other games:

Lions -11.5 at Voltbet 5 units
Lions -12.5 at Voltbet 10 units
Griquas +16.5 at Voltbet 5 units
Boks +4.5 at Victor Chandler 5 units
WP +1.5 at WSB 5 units
Draw Sharks/WP at 33/1 at Voltbet 0.5 units

Already had my bet down when I saw GO has WP at +3. Not going to invest further and hopefully the +1.5 would be enough. Sharkpaw, lets hope the Sharks win by one and we'll all be happy.

Anjoy the weekend's rugby guys and RB, enjoy the test. Should be a great game!

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

This weekend I've kept my hands in my pockets and shied away from the Currie Cup bets. Will be supporting the Sharks one hundred percent and I wont need a payout to enjoy their win! Go the boys!

I think there could be some major moves on the Sports pics leader board (as well as big losses or gains for the Forum lads! wink ). Griquas could easily give the Bulls a good run for their money and who knows abouth whether the Cheetahs can dominate enough to justify a 28 point margin. The Lions might look good for their 14 point gap, but I don't think the Pumas are as bad as many people think. And we've already seen on this forum that we're split on the Durban game... I think the one result that the most of us agree on is a NZ win! speechlesssmiley Eish.

Loving the opposing views, Bookies dream w-end!!

As with a few guys, I'm strongly on the following.
1) NZ -3.5
2) Lions -13.5
3) Sharks -1.5

Bit undecided with the other games, so going with the above and including a few multiples with Bulls and cheetahs.

Def feel Sharks can do the business as WP looked v average last weekend, and I think Sharks pack will give them a hard time up front and hopefully get the backs going on the front foot. Go you good things!!

NZ -3.5 is still the bet for me although I do like the look of the Bok side a little more than past weeks. Going to the game so if the bet doesn't arrive, the Bokks better win. I will be pissed if they lose by 1 or 2 points smile
With the boys on Lions -14.5
Think Griquas, even though not great travellers, can push Bulls and taken Griquas +.
Not sure about Cheetahs vs Leopards but if pushed Leopards +.
Province with my heart so no bet!

And for good measure another 2 units high on total points at 60

WSB set the overs/unders line at 58.5 - I will take 5 units on the overs there as well.

No need to punt the other games I am so involved in this one.

See Potgieter out for Bulls - a bit of a concern that for minus backers

Bulls in trouble and 14-27 down to Griquas, Cheetahs 24-0 over Leopards but no one in as much trouble as me in this Lions game.

Such a good start and pathetic since - shirts, points, supremacy, handicap - they all in trouble and I need a big 2nd half or the weekend is off to a shocker.

The intent is there from the Lions but handling errors are a disgrace.

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

In my wisdom I decided to add some excitement to my evening by following Brent in the spreads. But I only went for the total shirts bet. Not looking very rosy!! This is my very first spread bet and I might never return! wink

Brent I presume we get nothing for a penalty try...?

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Must say I was very confident in this one but ended up taking a big klap and gave back everything I won on the Lions last week  sad

Couch, sorry mate you picked the wrong game although the good news is that a penalty try counts as 8 and it ended on 86 so only a small loss on that particular bet.

What really puzzled me for the Lions is they did not contest the breakdown, they just stood back and let the Pumas dominate posession. At 13-0 up I really though a big payday was on the way.

R Tommy it is tough to get text commentary and following www.15.co.za on twitter is about the best as they update on Twitter

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

All set for the big game although still trying to decide how to play it.

Conditions look perfect and it should be a cracking match.

Handicap appears to be stable.

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Heart has won the battle today, taken the profit + a further 2 units from yesterdays womens rugby onto Boks - 6 units Boks +4.5 @ 9/10.

Hope it's a cracker, and 1st score SA Penalty would be very welcome!

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

The green is back, agree with Cape Sharky / Southpaw, there's alot riding on this game for the Boks!! At the start of the tri-nations, AB's was faves by a furlong or more (haha)!!!! Why? Home advantage, its payback time now. PDV got alot of stick for team selection, but looking at it very closely, this is a long term selection and "protection" plan for key players. Perhaps even the best choice ever. I'm looking forward to c Juan Smith and De Jongh deliver, up close and midfield. Beware the Freestate Cheetahs kick, its a wild one!!

Imo, this is the best team by far, excluding Ricky, but have the goods to deliver!! As they say in poker circles before............All in!!!!!! Take the bet!!!!!! Go bokke!!!!!

Spreads looking great as well, betting to avoid might be total shirts:

SA kicking metres buy 15 units at 155
SA multipoints buy 15 units at 135
SA win 25 units
SA +8 cap 50 units

Good luck all! beersmiley  beersmiley  beersmiley  big_smile

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Must be a bit brave 2nite, could close the spreads for a huge profit, but should hang in there? Points looking good, will hang in there.

Woodcock for wing, hehe!!!!!

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Just can't help but rub it in a bit.

Sharks you beauties!!! Absolutely dominant in every aspect of the game, what a brilliant end to the weekend betting, but obviously a bit disappointing about the Boks.

To all the Sharks followers/backers, nice one!!!  beersmiley

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

I could have been waking up in a very different mood this morning!

Having lost 75 units in Friday nights Pumas v Lions clash I was very undecided on the All Black game.

I took a late call to weight my spreads towards New Zealand shirts and points and with 77 minutes gone I was 120 units down and was staring down the barrel. I had already made up my mind not to bet on the WP game when McCaw scored that try bringing some relief. The big one was still to come though and when no 22 went over on the hooter I had experienced an amazing 133 unit swing in 3 minutes and ended up making 13 units, the most unlikley profit I could have imagined.

Watching with friends and family I had tried to look as calm as possible while seemingly on the verge of a massive loss so you can imagin their surprise when I jumped out of my chair like a crazed animal to shout Dagg home, the relief was immense.

Must say though that the Boks were stiff as the McCaw try should never have been after a forward pass earlier in the movement but from a bookies balance point of view that finish will long live in my memory.

On to the Sharks game and well done to Sharks backers. Although I did not follow it did put doubts in my mind and I never got involved in WP supremacy instead selling shirts at 57.

This looked likely to deliver me a 70 unit profit on the game although when Nick Koster (19) went over this was more than halved to 32 units.

Still from where I was a few hours earlier I was more than happy to bank it and accept a manageable loss on the weekend.

Not a good weekend for me on SportsPicks and I think it was Couch who said earlier he expected some movement and it certainly came, sadly for me not in the direction I wanted.

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

Well done to the Sharks backers, did not watch the game as I was in transit from FNB Stadium but saw the highlights and no complaints with the result. Better side won and I got a PK in the Sportspicks this weekend sad

That Dagg try saved my punting weekend and was worth about 70 units to me! Gave a lot back due to the WP result but the bet of the weekend for me was the SA at HT, NZ at FT at 11/2. Stuck 5 units on and it paid 27.5 units smile That was the difference and the reason I am slighly in the black with the TN and CC this weekend.

The Boks did well and I feel for Smitty, it was such a great atmosphere and awesome 79 minutes of Rugby until the Dagg Try.

Note to self: The next time the forum is split down the middle, the best bet may be a no bet!!!

Re: Tri Nations - Week 6 & Currie Cup Week 7

good going lads on the punts, some good swings there and nice calls! beersmiley .

Stoked with Sharks win and good profit, a bit soured by 2 things - 1 the Boks loss, hurt the heart and the pocket with that last try and feel for Smitty, and secondly - I was so desperate to find Sharks WP game on an internet video feed (wasn't televised here) I went trawling websites I had never heard of before - the net result? A virus on my laptop!  sad  So ended up following the text updates on SA rugby on Mrs Southpaw's laptop, not ideal when you've got a decent sized bet down!  laughsmiley
