Re: Durban July

I love punting the July but I really have no clue about horses actually....

I am going to put a few units on River Jetez to win and place. I see Jeff Lloyd is up on her this year. Really hoping Lloyd can get his 1st July winner this year! He has been a stalwart for SA racing over the years.

Re: Durban July

No doubt Lloyd has been just that. I have always been a Pocket Power man but I think the younger crop have his measure at this stage of his career. My money is on Fort Vogue this year. The connections have done it all before: Anton Marcus looking for his 5th "July" triumph, with Mike Bass and the Marsh Shirtliff colours.

Does have an open look about the race though.

Re: Durban July

I was all for Irish Flame a few weeks ago but have cooled on that idea. Agree with cracker on the younger generation but will take my time making a pick

Re: Durban July

OK, so most of you will know that Horses are NOT my forte, so I need help here. Love the July but usually waste money just coz I wanna have a bet.
Pocket power - maybe getting too old and drawn bad - 15/1
Irish Flame - good draw, Shea and De Kock - favorite 4.5/1
Fort Vougue - fair draw, Marcus and Bass - 5.5/1
River jetez - always liked, draw good, Lloyd and Bass - 7/1
What about Bold Silvano - Delpech, De Cock and drawn 2

Re: Durban July

been looking for the 'Thundering Jet' of this years July, at moment Flying Tristram is my pick of the outsiders @ 25/1 for an ew bet.

At 14/1 Pocket Power also appeals, would be a great achievement by the veteran.

As for the fillies - Love Is in The Air might be worth a sneaky place at a huge price, probably around 12/1 a place.

Re: Durban July

Yes, I agree Flying Tristram is that "Thundering Jet" type which would make the Quartet pay. The other I quite fancy for the back end of that quartet is Captain Scott at any price!

That is if Bass and de Kock don't share the first four places between them which is a distinct possibility.

World of Sport still got FT at 25/1, 4.5/1 for a top 4 place.

Re: Durban July

Taken a bit on Flying Tristram to win (maybe the bookie who went 12/1 remembered my Thundering Jet tip from last year! lol )

Also taken some 12/1 place Love is in The Air, can get that with Betxchange, 4 places.

Here is a summary of an interview I did with Neil Andrews earlier this week.

Neil is as passionate about his horses as I am about Le Tour and you can also link to the full podcast if you wish

Re: Durban July

I am starting to get really pumped for the Durban July.

About 18 years ago a bunch of single students used to get together at my folks place to do a draw and watch the July every year.

Gradually girlfriends appeared on the scene and when the first kids arrived in the early 2000's Mom cried enough and the annual day moved to my place.

This year the thought of 18+ kids galloping around my town house was so scary that I have taken the step of hiring a venue - a kids party place with a big screen TV and DSTV - that gathering of a handful of students now sits at around 22 adults and 23 kids.

What a great day it will be (we even have a kids draw so we get them started early) and the teachers and pupils at my Kids school must be confused as to what "July Day" is as they talk about it like Christmas and Easter.

I can't wait - food, drink, family, friends, Racing, Rugby and of course a couple of betting accounts topped up and ready for action!

Bring it on....

Re: Durban July

lol, loved the Gambling granny story!  lol

You can't ignore it though - every time I come back to SA we go the races at Clairwood, everyone looks to me the so called punting guru for the tips, my mom normally sticks to her own guesses (horse winked at her in parade ring, colours remind her of a favourite dress etc etc), and on many occassions she's the only 1 smiling at end of day?!  speechlesssmiley smile

Re: Durban July

July always an exciting day in our racing calendar.
Some great previews and nice picks here.
Agree with Justin and Mackem with River Jetez to win.
Pocket Power badly drawn but should finish in the first four.
Also with Southpaw with Love is in the Air for the roughie as she and River Jetez not too far apart in their meetings.
River Jetez to win, with Pocket Power, Love is in the Air, Fort Vogue and Bold Silvano for the quartet.
Enjoy, lads.

Re: Durban July

not a sausage, got the winner in 8th but a poor July result for me...however -

" Gran described how there was 4 Aces on the packet in the middle of a circle" - i reckon Granny Graham made a small fortune on Service Ace finishing 4th!! speechlesssmiley  beersmiley

Re: Durban July

LOL South it hit us afterwards what the 4 Aces meant  wink

My only winning July bet was places on Service Ace at 14/1 but had a good day at the rugby so Gran getting her cut of that and the balance to the wife and kids.

Had a great day with mates and family although from a racing perspective none of my fancies threatened.
