The Old White Course at The Greenbrier plays host to this weeks PGA Tour event and the par 70 track should favour accuracy over brute strength although with fairways reportedly generous I am throwing a “gorilla” into the mix as well.

With the Durban July taking up much of my attention and punting rands this week (enter our Free Durban July competition at www.sportspicks.co.za ) I am taking things easy on the golfing front and am only shelling out 7 units on the PGA Tour.

Jim Furyk Mr. “Steady Eddie” himself is favourite at around the 16/1 mark but I am looking to the Tour’s most consistent non-winner this season, a player who has shot a 59 in 2010, a long hitter and a worn out Englishman to fly the flag for me.

Matt Kuchar has been in brilliant nick and while he has not won in 2010 he has had 4 top 10’s in his last 5 starts and sits atop the all-around ranking and is high up in GIR and the putting stats as well. I have followed him on and off this year and have a feeling he is ready to deliver the real deal to punters at the Greenbrier. There is 22/1 that he wins although I will weight my stake to places at 5/1.

Paul Goydos shot a 59 when runner up to Steve Stricker in the John Deere a few weeks back and he should be fresh having had time to recover from an unsuccessful trip to the Open. I always watch him on courses where you need a lot of birdies to win and the 100/1 on offer looks fair enough about a man not afraid to go low.

JB Holmes is a big hitter and on this course that may not be as big an advantage as it usually is. On the other hand if the fairways are wide as I understand they are the big hitters could well benefit through avoiding the trees and going into green with short irons from clean lies. He has had 2 runner up finishes already in what has been a consistent season – at 35/1 I am hoping he goes one better this week.

Last week Brian Davis let me down as he did not even complete 36 holes pulling out due to exhaustion. The fact that he starts this week suggests he must be feeling better and if so the 180/1 about his chances looks a bit disrespectful. He plays well on courses where accuracy is rewarded and he has had two runners up finishes this year amongst some admittedly rather ordinary showings.
