Rugby: Currie Cup Week 9, European Cup, Mitre10 + other

A decent week for me on the rugby with a solid win on Boks points and some Pro 14 profits. Gave some back on Argentina but luckily decided not to watch so went smaller than I would have

Currie Cup and European Cup this week.

The Currie Cup regular season ends and I know caps have been out for a while but I have not looked at them so mine below and then I will do an immediate comparison with actual caps

Pumas +10.5 v Lions - an interesting game as the Pumas can in theory make the playoffs at the expense of either the Lions or Bulls, suspect I could be well out with this cap

Griquas +12.5 v Sharks - the Sharks should wrap 2nd place up

Bulls +7.5 v WP - Bulls would likely have qualified by kickoff but could possibly need a bonus point, WP may need a bonus point to go back top

Had a quick look at Betx and WSB

Pumas +10.5 v Lions - close, Betx 7.5, WSB 8.5

Griquas +12.5 v Sharks - close, Betx 14.5, WSB 13.5, I originally went 14.5 but then thought it might be too high

Bulls +7.5 - closeish, Betx 9.5 WSB 10.5

Not sure if there has been any movement since the caps came out?

Betx opened with Lions -6 vs Pumas and WP -7.5 vs Bulls

Got involved in WP -7.5 and happy with that, need to recoup some loot after the Argies 2nd half meltdown

Scared money dont make money! BOOM!

BetX opened on Pumas +6.5 v Lions, Griquas +14.5 v Sharks & Bulls +7.5 v WP
WSB looks the same as when it opened

Hi Guys,
Just a question:
Are we going to be following the Europeans Champion Cup and the Challenge Cup on GFTG ?
They both start Friday and appear to be massive competitions with the finest of the European teams playing.
I've just accepted Superbru invitations and will probably be placing some bets too, after I get a feel for them.
Anybody ? Brent ? Oracle ? Hanrick ? Hein ? ... ?
Please let us know...
Cheers, Kirky.

Rugby champs over so boks should be back in action for the unions

WP -7.5 & Lions -6.5 for me

Just remember contracted Boks are not allowed to play in the Currie Cup. Not sure who is contracted though.

Still struggling to get a complete list of contracted Springboks from Mr. Google but from this morning's paper the following players trained with their unions already:

Wilco Louw
Bongi Mbonambi
Sikhumbuzo Notshe
Marco van Staden
Trevor Nyakane
Elton Jantjies
Embrose Papier
Damian Willemse

If I remember correctly, Siya said that some of his boys would be going back to their unions for awhile. Clarity on this would be nice - grin.

Mitre Cup action:

Southland +13.5 HT handicap vs Auckland.

Southland have covered 5 of the last 6 HT handicaps and have only had the wheels come off in the second half. Couple that with Auckland making 8 changes from the game on the weekend, with 6 of those coming in the forward pack. Southland will be itching to put in a performance at home after a miserable season.

Just a warning. Auckland have kept their 1st choice backline the same, and Southland has replaced their WHOLE backline with new players.

Hawksbay V Tasman

The Over under line sticks out like a sore thumb. 51.5 is really generous considering every HB bar week 1 has cleared this number with ease. Tasman prob the in form team of the Mitre 10 cup and Hawksbay are no slouches scoring tries. Hawksbay also have this special defensive pattern were they refuse to tackle.

Think most books only price up following the lineups being released.
(Many teams, in particular the French sides, don't care a jot about this competition, so often field much weakened teams).

On a separate note - anyone else that uses oddschecker.com having issues in the last few days with the markets loading......?

Word of warning for this weekends European matches - there is some nasty weather due to hit certain parts of the UK & Ireland on Friday & Saturday - strong winds and heavy rain.
Will have a big impact on certain matches.

Leinster have expectedly named an all but full strength team vs Wasps tomorrow night.
Wasps team perhaps better than expected with Brad Shields, Willie Le Roux & Lima Sopoaga all named.
Although I expect Leinster to dominate them up front (plus the weather forecast looks grim - advantage Leinster for me) so have taken Leinster -14
I see the money is coming for the home team, cap now -16 or -17

Other one that catches my attention at this point is Scarlets v Racing.
Scarlets have several injuries in their pack and they are an expansive/offloading team who are much better suited to dry conditions.
Going to wait for lineups before going too large, but have taken a chunk of Racing +3, as I think their pack will overpower the Scarlets.

On the (Champions Cup) outright markets, have put a couple of beers on some long odds selections:

Top Try Scorer - Steff Evans (Scarlets) @ 151
Is 151/1 with Boyle Sports, 23/1 with other books.
Hasn't featured much this term for the Scarlets as coming back from injury, but he has found form with 'Scarlets A' and Pivac has said he will be involved this weekend. (Tom Prydie, who has been starting ahead of Evans was injured last week also).
Whether they can repeat last years efforts of going deep into the tournament (making the semi's) is debatable - but at these odds its worth a nudge for me.

Tournament winner - Lyon @ 150/1
Bradie will probably laugh at me saying no chance, he's probably right
But IMO they have the potential to be "last years La Rochelle", who made it out of their pool in their first year in the competition.
Once you make it out of your pool, you never know from there.

Evening guys. Been busy few days at work. Havent had chance to post my model caps for the week. Will try do later or early tomorrow morning.

For the 2 Friday games the model loves the Perpignan +14.5. Seeing as they picked a young side it is probably not the best pick. In the other game it had Leinster -18.94 so believe all the value is gone there now.

Will check out some of the other Challenge Cup games if they are indeed starting to appear locally.

I have seen the sides. I saw that Mike Brown, Nathan Earle and Marcus Smith are playing. I quite fancy the minus 28.5 here. I do also like Canterbury to win both halves and Canterbury -14 tomorrow as well. One other fixture I like is La Rochelle -26
against Yenisey STM at 1.91 as well.

It is still a strong La Rochelle team even though they have Ihaia West and Victor Vito on the bench. I'm not exactly expecting much from that russian team :)

The Agen squad is a second / third choice team
Priority to the Top 14, weather will be more than OK in Twickenham so even if the cap is very high, this could end up in a massive loss for Agen

Flicked TV on last night to see this game was on, think it was about 15min to go, Lions 33pts, easy kickable penalty. Changed channels as was injury delay, checked score later. How did Lions end on 33?! So stiff.

Have had a few weeks off all sports and betting but like a few in Europe today and will post later.

Was staggered myself....if they would have kicked a penalty..( they had 2 chances) then it would have been 15 points ahead, and would have wrapped the game up. It was a crazy decision...anyway
