football.afcon_ghana The last of the AFCON 2012 quarter finals sees Group D winners Ghana meet with Group C runners up Tunisia in Franceville on Sunday and the Black Stars are even money favourites to win 90 minutes.

Tunisia coach Sami Trabelsi is a really pivotal figure here, even before a ball is kicked. Tunisia sealed a quarter final place after winning both their opening group matches against Morocco and then Niger, each by a 2-1 scoreline. Trabelsi then decided to make wholesale changes for the final group match and promptly saw his side go down 1-0 to co-hosts Gabon. The coach stated that he was protecting players on a yellow card from a possible suspension in the quarter finals as well as keeping key players fresh. There is plenty of logic there but the other side of the coin is that in doing so, he made Gabon's task of winning the group much easier and as Ghana were highly likely to top Group D, Tunisia must now face the Black Stars rather than Mali.

Whether Trabelsi's rotational decision proves a stroke of genius or a forward planning blunder will become apparent here. One player, Adel Chedli subsequently quit the squad in disgust at not getting a run out against Gabon and yet a team unity derived from assembling a squad of largely domestic based players had been seen as a big plus point to their chances. The win over Morocco was full of merit although a little fortuitous on the balance of play. A last gasp goal was needed to see off group whipping boys Niger and they probably got what they deserved from the Gabon match, especially in view of some bizarre goalkeeping from one of the reserves Trabelsi brought in.

Ghana are unbeaten after topping their group with two wins and a 1-1 draw with a talented but luckless Guinea side. They started with clean sheets in beating Botswana 1-0 and Mali 2-0, the second half of the latter game being their most impressive display of the tournament so far. Turning the clock back to the knockout stages of the 2010 finals, Ghana advanced to the final with 1-0 wins over Angola and Nigeria before losing to Egypt by the same scoreline. Clean sheets are the name of the game and the only goal they conceded in this tournament looked a touch fortuitous to me.

Analysis

It maybe the Tunisian coach is of the opinion that Ghana are nothing to fear and if we do see a surprise here, I'd think twice about opposing them in the semi finals. However, I'm with the Black Stars but only after a fight and I will take my chances in the HT/FT market, Draw/Ghana
