WSB Logo Orange 80x80The golf world is on high alert as we gear up for the second major of the year, the US PGA Championship. The top players in the world will head to Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina for this years renewal of the tournament where they will battle it out in what promises to be tough conditions.

We look at this week’s golf from a betting angle and pick 4 players to take on the bookmakers.

The Course

Quail Hollow is a venue most PGA Tour professionals are familiar with and it plays to a par 71. The course lies 600 feet above sea level and is a testing tree-lined traditional parkland layout. Water comes into play on only five holes, however, there is plenty of rough to keep the pros in check.

The fairways are an average of only 28 yards wide and so hitting them will be a challenge but also crucial given the rough. Accuracy will be key this week as players will look to keep their ball in the fairway in order to attack pins on the very fast greens but the length of the course (7558 yards) is such that distance off the tee is also going to be important.

It last hosted the PGA in 2017 when Justin Thomas won and Rory McIlroy won the Truist Open here in 2024.

Market Leaders

It is the battle of the titans with the two best players in the World, Scottie Scheffler and Roy McIlroy going head-to-head and both determined to put another major on the CV.

The bookies have Scheffler trading at 5.00 while McIlroy is trading at 5.50. Bryson DeChambeau is trading at 10.00 and it is 19.00 and better the field at the time of writing.

Selections:

Rory McIlroy at 5.50

In the McIlroy versus Scheffler debate this week I’m going with Rory again. McIlroy has already secured three wins this year at three of the toughest courses on tour, Pebble Beach, TPC Sawgrass and Augusta National. He has also won at Quail Hollow four times over his career and has won the PGA Championship twice back in 2012 and 2014. McIlroy finished seventh at last week’s Truist Championship and has finished 15th or better in his last six starts in some of the toughest fields of the year.

Suggested bet: Rory McIlroy each way at 5.50

Tommy Fleetwood at 46.00

Fleetwood is coming into this week on a good run of form. After finishing 21st at the Masters, he followed it up with a 7th place finish at the RBC Heritage and then 4th at the Truist Championship last weekend. He has finished 13th, 5th and 14th in his last three starts at Quail Hollow. Being a course that suits an accurate player who also has some length, Fleetwood fits this mould perfectly. With his form going into the weekend, I can see him doing very well this weekend.

Suggested bet: Each way at 46.00.

Andrew Novak at 201.00

Novak has been on flying form on the PGA tour this season. In his last four starts he has secured hist first win, a runner up, a third-place finish and 17th at last weeks Truist Championship where he finished strong in a very competitive field. He showed last week that he has the potential to compete with the best of the best at the Truist Championship and I think he will be one of the surprise names going into this week.

Suggested bet: Each way at 201.00 and a bigger stake on a Top 20 finish at 5.00.

Our 4th and final selection will be added by Thursday morning South African time.
