Man City

City were paired with Championship side Southampton in the semi finals, they made plenty f changes to their line up and after falling behind on 79 minutes they fought back with late goals from Doku and Gonzalez to come through with a 2-1 win and seal a pace in what is their fourth successive FA Cup final. In the 2023 final they beat Manchester United 2-1 but in 2024 they lost to United by the same scoreline. In 2025 City lost 1-0 to Palace.

This season’s FA Cup run had started with a 10-1 hiding of Exeter in Manchester and they went on to beat Salford 2-0 in another home fixture before a 3-1 win at Newcastle put them into the last 8 where they came up against Liverpool. A hat trick from Haaland and a goal from Semenyo saw City through 4-0 against Slot’s team and a swift return to Wembley where they beat Arsenal2-0 in the EFL Cup final.

City are running second to Arsenal in the EPL title race, 2 points behind the Gunners with 2 rounds of matches to go. They will most likely need to win both their remaining matches, at Bournemouth and at home to Villa whilst hoping Arsenal drop points at home to Burnley and / or away at Palace.

City have already won the EFL Cup this season, beating Arsenal 2-0 in the final.

Chelsea

Chelsea were 1-0 winners against Leeds in their semi final with Enzo Fernandez scoring the all important goal on 23 minutes. That was Calum McFarlane’s first game as caretaker coach and he now gets to lead Chelsea out in the final. Chelsea were last in the final in 2022 when they lost to Liverpool on spot kicks. They were also runners up to Leicester in 2021 and Arsenal in 2020. They last lifted this trophy in 2018 when they beat Manchester United.

In the earlier rounds this season Chelsea had been knocking in the goals in this competition with wins at Charlton (5-1), Hull (4-0) and then Wrexham (4-2) although they needed extra time to see off the Welsh side. In the quarter finals they hosted Port Vale and romped to a 7-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

In the EPL are down in ninth position and could miss out on European qualification if they don’t win this competition. They drew at Liverpool last time out and lost each of their previous 6 league games including a 3-0 home defeat to Man City as recently as the 12th April.
