The PGA Tour remains on the West Coast this week as the field heads to San Diego, California, for the Farmers Insurance Open at the iconic Torrey Pines Golf Course. One of the most demanding stops on the early-season schedule, this tournament regularly rewards elite ball-strikers and players who are comfortable competing on long, challenging layouts. Below, we break down the week from a betting perspective and highlight four players to take on the bookmakers.

Course and Format

The Farmers Insurance Open is played across two courses, with players rotating between them during the opening rounds before tackling the tougher test on the weekend. All players return to the South Course for the final two rounds.

Torrey Pines South Course

The South Course is the primary test and host of the final 36 holes. A par 72 stretching to over 7,700 yards (7,040 metres), it is one of the longest courses on the PGA Tour. It features thick rough, deep bunkers, and narrow landing areas that place a premium on driving distance and accuracy.

The greens are Poa annua, known for becoming bumpy later in the day, which places extra emphasis on confident putting. Coastal winds can also play a major role, particularly in the afternoons, making ball-flight control and patience essential.

Torrey Pines North Course

The North Course is shorter and more forgiving, offering the best scoring opportunities of the week. Players must take advantage here, as scores tend to tighten significantly once play shifts exclusively to the South Course.

In summary: Torrey Pines favours powerful, accurate drivers, elite iron players, and golfers who can remain composed when scoring becomes difficult. Players who combine length with disciplined course management tend to thrive.

Selections

Xander Schauffele at 15.00

Schauffele is a proven performer at Torrey Pines with 2 top 10’s in his last 4 starts although he didn’t play last year. He is one of the most reliable big-event players on the PGA Tour. His combination of length, accuracy, and elite iron play makes him ideally suited to the South Course. He consistently ranks among the leaders in strokes gained: tee-to-green, which is vital on a demanding layout like this. With his strong West Coast record, he looks the standout option at the head of the market although we are relying on him returning froma lengthy layoff in top shape.

Bet: Xander Schauffele each way at 15.00

Jason Day at 34.00

Day has an outstanding record at Torrey Pines, including multiple victories and regular top-10 finishes. He is extremely comfortable on Poa annua greens and in coastal conditions. His recent form has been encouraging with a runner up finish last week, and if he continues to drive the ball well, he has the experience and course knowledge to contend again.

Bet: Jason Day each way at 34.00

Ryan Gerard at 34.00

Gerard arrives in excellent form with 3 consecutive runner-up finishes and the 26 year old American has been one of the most consistent performers in recent months. His ball-striking has been particularly strong, and Torrey Pines rewards players who can repeatedly find fairways and greens and he was 15th here on debut in 2025. With confidence high and momentum on his side, he looks capable of delivering another big week.

Bet: Ryan Gerard each way at 34.00

Aaron Rai at 81.00

Rai represents strong long-shot value. He is one of the most accurate drivers in professional golf and excels on demanding courses where positioning is crucial and he has a 6th place finish to his credit in the tournament 4 years ago. While Torrey Pines is long, accuracy and patience are just as important, especially in windy conditions. If he can convert enough chances on the greens, he is capable of far outperforming his odds and he carries the rank outsider flag for us this week.

Bet: Aaron Rai each way at 81.00
