England:
England were marginal favourites for last week’s clash with the All Blacks at Twickenham and despite conceding the first 12 points of the game they fought back to claim a 33-19 victory. OF England’s 4 tries 3 came in the second half, George Ford converted twice and also landed 2 drop goals and a penalty to strtch England’s winning streak to 10 matches.
Prior to that England saw off Fiji 38-18 at Twickenham. They had problems early on and only led 14-13 at half time and 21-18 after 60 minutes but 4 of their final total of 6 tries arrived in the second half. At the start of the November series England beat the Wallabies 25-7, also at this venue and again the damage was done later in the game with 2 of their 4 tries coming inside the last 10 minutes to put the game to bed.
England were in Argentina in July and they won both test matches (35-12 and 22-17) before they thrashed USA (40-5).
They had a solid 6 Nations early in the year, winning 4 and losing 1 of their matches to finish in second spot, just 1 point behind title winners France. They lost their opening match of that tournament in Ireland (27-22) before narrow wins at home to France (26-25) and Scotland (16-15). They also put Italy away (47-24) in another home fixture before a thumping (68-14) victory in Wales.
In the November international series of 2024 England lost at home to New Zealand (24-22), Australia (42-37) and South Arica (29-20) before beating Japan (59-14).
Argentina:
Argentina pulled off a stunning comeback to beat Scotland 33-24 at Murrayfield last Sunday. They looked dead and buried at 21-0 down early in the second half but sprang to life with 5 tries from the 56th minute onwards ( 4 converted by Santiago Carreras) to claim a famous win.
Earlier in the month Argentina’s first action of this series came against Wales in Cardiff and they came out on top 52-28, scoring 4 tries in the first half and another 3 in the second all of which were converted by Carreras.
In the Rugby Championship in August / September / October Argentina won 2 and lost 4 of their matches. A double against the All Blacks saw Los Pumas go down 41-24 but they subsequently pulled off a first win over New Zealand on their home turf in winning the Round 2 clash 29-23. Two matches against the Wallabies in Australia were both thrillers with the Wallabies edging the first 28-24 before Argentina came out on top in the second 28-26. To finish up Argentina lost 67-30 to the Boks in South Africa before another meeting at Twickenham saw them go down 29-27.
In July Argentina lost 2 test matches at home to England (35-12 and 22-17) before thrashing Uruguay (52-17).
In the 2024 November series Argentina won in Italy (50-18), they were edged out in Ireland (22-19) and then lost in France (37-23).
